What do you think is the best way to install and maintain python and Jupyter lab on Mac in 2025?
It’s a mess on my current machine. Quickly running python in a terminal for a quick job uses a different version with different packages than Jupyter lab. Typing “python3” in the terminal doesn’t default to the most recent. At some point anaconda was installed.
What’s the cleanest way for a new machine to have an organized python environment? 90% of what I do is in Jupyter lab.

I use brew to install ‘pyenv’ and ‘pipenv’. From there I use pyenv to manage the Python version and pipenv for packages and virtual environments. On top of all that, I have OhMyZsh integration that automatically runs ‘pipenv shell’ when I enter a directory with a pipenv virtual environment defined. Works very nicely and integrates well with VS Code, too. Addendum: By doing it this way, I don’t ever touch the system Python installed by Apple. A lot less complications that way.

Macs used to include python2 by default, under the name "python". They then added python3 under the name "python3". More recently, they stopped including python2, so now there's only python3 and the name "python" doesn't point at anything. Same with pip vs pip3. If you want to use the shorter names, you can make links or aliases. The python interpreter built into macOS is used for some system tasks. You can use it for yourself, but you shouldn't replace any of the pre-installed packages with later versions. If you need/want to have the latest versions, you should either use a virtual environment, or make a separate python install with brew. More on reddit.com

The latest update of macOS Monterey removed python2.7 and only has python3 (3.8.9) so if you update your OS it should be fine (I'm using this, but also use pyenv as I need specific versions for specific things). More on reddit.com

Why 3.6, specifically? It's so old it's not even getting security patches anymore. 3.7 is the oldest currently supported version, and even then I'd strongly recommend at least 3.10. Everything you care about should work perfectly well on either of those, or anything in between. Using the latest version (currently 3.11) would technically be the best, but if you're worried about some dependencies being incompatible it's not a big problem to stay a minor version behind.
