Is the M2 MacBook Air worth it in 2024? And can it me through 4 years of college
Should I wait for the new MacBook Air M2? Or just buy M1? Iโm probably going to buy it in July
My opinion on the matter is that you are best served by obtaining the newest release that you can. So...
Wait, unless you cannot wait.

Laptops with the M2 chip can be a strong fit for a wide range of users. They balance fast everyday performance with notable battery efficiency, which many students, commuters, and office pros appreciate. Creators working with photos, podcasts, or light video projects may also find the base models responsive.
- Great fit: web, documents, video calls, noteโtaking, streaming, light creative tasks.
- Consider stepping up: if you handle large 4K timelines, complex code builds, or big datasets frequently.
While browsing, youโll see both thinโandโlight designs and performanceโoriented versions. Picking sufficient memory and storage up front can help keep things smooth over time. If you prefer value, restored and preโowned listings can offer savings; just check condition notes and whatโs included.
Whatโs the difference between M2, M2 Pro, and M2 Max?
These names generally indicate performance tiers within the same chip family. As you move from M2 to M2 Pro to M2 Max, you typically get more processing and graphics capability, which can help with heavier workloads.
- M2: solid for everyday tasks, office work, studies, and light creative use.
- M2 Pro: geared for larger photo libraries, longer video timelines, development work, and frequent multitasking.
- M2 Max: aimed at demanding graphics, bigger projects, and intense multitasking.
On product pages, compare core counts, memory options, and cooling designs, as these can influence sustained performance. Screen sizes and storage options also vary. Choosing the level that matches your typical workload can provide a more comfortable experience day to day.
What should I check before buying a restored M2 laptop?
Restored and preโowned devices can offer value, and a quick checklist can help you shop confidently.
- Condition details: review the grade and any cosmetic or functional notes in the listing.
- Battery and accessories: look for battery health info if provided and confirm whatโs included (charger, cable).
- Specs and year: verify chip tier (M2, M2 Pro, M2 Max), memory, storage, and model year to align with your needs.
- Policies: check the return window, warranty information, and seller ratings.
You can use site filters like โRestoredโ or โPreโOwnedโ to narrow options. Reading the full product description and Q&A section can clarify what to expect before you buy.
I got a MacBook Air M2 for a pretty good deal at Best Buy. For 799$ Itโs the base model (8gb/256gb SSD) To give some context, Iโm starting school this spring of 2025. I was originally planning on starting in November and taking a one year LPN course. Plans have changed, Iโm now starting a 4 year RN program. Iโve been told these laptops only last around 3 years, give or take.. especially with the minimum amount of storage. Although I have heard differing opinions on that.
Now the M4 is said to be released in early 2025โฆ Im not sure if the Best Buy employee was just trying to make the sale but he did say he does Not see the M2 getting any cheaper than this. And that They typically just remove the stock before going lower on the price. Can anyone confirm this? I will say, If this laptop could get me through the next 4 years of college then I see no issue keeping it! Otherwise I may just return and wait for the new release on the chance I can get an even better deal and more storage. Any advice is much appreciated!
