How do I unlock my Macbook password?
You may opt for a password-reset option in order to unlock your MacBook password. The steps are the following:
Step 1. In case you notice the restart option and demonstrate password reset options, hit restart the Mac.
Step 2. Opt for a user, which you would like to reset the password, then hit the next button.
Step 3. Provide the new password details, and click 'Next.'
Step 4. Hit the 'Restart' button when the password reset is done.

How to hard reset a MacBook?
In order to hard reset your MacBook, follow the steps below:
Step 1. You need to select 'System settings' from the Apple menu, which is located at the edge of the screen.
Step 2. Opt for 'General' in the sidebar.
Step 3. Select Reset or Transfer on the right.
Step 4. Opt for Erase All Content and Settings.
If you are talking about the user password and you are locked out of your mac, you can try the following:
- Reboot into the Recovery Drive by choosing the ‘Apple‘ menu > Restart, hold down the ‘command’ + ‘r’ keys on the keyboard during the start up process, when you see the start up screen you can let go. When the machine boots eventually you will see the macOS or OS X Utilities screen.
- Go to the Utilites menu and select Terminal
- At the prompt type ‘resetpassword’ (hit enter)
- Reset your password
Keep in mind that this deletes your keychain, so your saved passwords are lost
I have the same issue. I found out when I watch what's happening carefully, as I type my password the first time the Mac resets and clears the text area (shortens the line of asterisks) and I have to enter it again - making sure it's not a partial entry. Seems something is still waking up in the background. Type slowly and observe if the line of '***' becomes suddenly shorter. Frustrating.
Other causes have to do with unlocking FileVault if you have that set up. Found on discussions.apple.com.
It looks like that User's folder got corrupted somehow, and the System doesn't know what to show and load, as It wasn't there.
Try logging with other user or a Disk Repair / Repair Permissions, through the Recovery Partition.
I get this as well. The only workaround is to do a hard reboot. Even logging in as guest user, then logging back to your regular user doesn't work.
It's not a user folder corruption issue as the Thecafremo says because I (and it sounds like, you) can get in after a hard reboot. Also, I recently happened to do my period disk volume repair and this issue recurred after the repair process.
