Type it in slowly and count the “•”s to see if they match. If not, plug in a keyboard, it may be the internal board. You can also reset the password from the recovery partition, but you will have to unlink and relink your iCloud account if you do. There are apple help articles you can find that will walk you through it. Once done, you may lose saved passwords and whatnot, but you’ll be able to get all your files back. Lastly, if your Apple ID is linked, you can use that to reset the password without losing everything. If you have that turned on. Good luck. Answer from Guardian1030 on reddit.com

r/macbookair on Reddit: Macbook password doesn't work. But you know your password. It just won't take it.
November 18, 2023 -

Macbook air 2020 m1 chip. Just bought it off Amazon a couple months ago. Barely a year in. Worked fine for a while since I got it. I did notice a funny thing that happens with it when using the fingerprint unlock. Every other day it asks for a password to re-enable the unlock. So of course you type in your password to unlock it. No big deal.

Well a couple months into it. I type my password in and a couple times my MacBook wouldn't take the password. Even though I know I typed it in correctly. It finally eats the password after like the 10th time. Strange right? Well don't think too much of it. Till I started noticing it happens about every other week. Sometimes I punch in that same password up to 20 times till it unlocks.

Well guys I finally did it. My MacBook is in that deactivate mode where you made a new password with your apple ID. And it won't even take your new password you just made. And it's a 5 min password lock so you got to wait every 5 or 11 or 15 mins to try again.

Has anyone else got this issue yet? It's sad that I might have to reset the whole MacBook. I got it specifically to learn how to code in javascript/react and stuff. I'll lose most of my code. I'll keep trying to unlock it for the rest of the week.

The only couple things I can think of is the keyboard is faulty. But I was able to type out my password for a username input for the apple ID to visually see what I typed out. And it came out right. Secondly the fingerprint unlock is glitches with the password unlock so they both just freeze up and it won't take it. Third quite possibly malware or a straight up apple defect.

Hi has anybody experienced their macbooks not recognizing your password from time to time? My macbook air would is being problematic lately. I input the same password I’ve been using for years and it started to not recognize it. There are days when I can input it and it’s correct, but frequently and mostly lately, no. What’s the issue and how can I solve this? I have to deal with this every morning when I log back in. Any help is appreciated!

On recent macOS, I've seen it just ignore the first key input after you wake it, so your first attempt would just fail. Otherwise, I fully believe it randomly rejects you just to mess with you. /s-not-s

How are you getting into your Mac each time, if it won't accept your password? You should let us know what version of macOS you are on, as well as what model Mac. I'll copy paste my solution (to get into your Mac when not accepting passwords) from a previous thread : TL;DR: A possible solution to get into your Mac is to boot into macOS Recovery—which asks for a password—and then restarting after seems to fix the issue. Here are the exact steps to reproduce what worked for me on an M2 MacBook Air: Turn off your Mac Press and hold the POWER button until the "Loading startup options" screen appears. Click Options and select "continue" macOS Recovery screen comes up, asking you to select your user Select your user, put in your user password, and click NEXT You are now in the Utilities window —Don't touch anything; what is important is that you entered your password to get here, and your Mac recognized it. Restart your Mac by going to  > RESTART At the loading screen, your Mac should now accept your user password, and macOS should boot into your user account normally from now on. Good luck! Please leave feedback for Apple so that they know to fix this bug asap. For some people that didn't work, but this did it: Use terminal to reset the password—to the same password you had before . Post Mortem: I continued to have this issue at the screensaver password prompt, but unlike the first time, Touch ID was accepted so I never had to resort to the recovery screen trick. And as of 15.3, I haven't had the issue at all, knock on wood.

I recommended a MacBook Pro for my spouse and she's currently using one as her daily driver. However, it sometimes won't accept her password to log in! Actually, the last two times the computer has locked, it wouldn't accept her password, despite her entering it in correctly. It's hard to believe this is even possible!

Yes, she's entering it in correctly. There's no reason why capslock or numlock would be on and there'd be some indication if they were (at least capslock!). She can remedy the issue by forcing a reboot. Yes, after a reboot, it will suddenly accept her password! That's how we know she's been entering it in correctly the whole time: she's not mistyping her password repeatedly, only to type it in correctly after the reboot... on two different occasions!

So, how's this possible? What the hell is happening?! I'm deeply embarrassed to have recommended a Mac to my wife: Apple is really embarrassing me here. Microsoft Windows has always "just worked."

She's using the newest M4 14" MacBook Pro in clamshell mode as her desktop and occasionally uses it as a laptop. Our current work-around is to set her laptop to never automatically lock, which is obviously not ideal. Any help or even ideas is greatly appreciated! Thank you...

edited to fix a very minor typo

My MacBook Air M2 on macOS sequoia 15.2 ‘s password stopped working. Today I randomly decided to key in my password instead of using touch id and I kept getting my password wrong, even though the password is engraved in my muscle memory. I had recorded a video of me typing my password incase I forgot it, and yet the password was wrong. I’ve never changed my password since purchase, about a year ago. I never use my password, especially when I’m near people, I always use touch I’d.

No one has access to my iPhone nor my Mac. My mum is the only one in the house today but I do not want to confront because I really don’t know what’s happening.

Any suggestions what should I do now? I googled but I’m not 100% if I should go ahead, I’m not sure which solution is my right solution too.

r/MacOS on Reddit: Local password stopped working after upgrade to 15.3.1 (Solution)
February 18, 2025 -

I just updated to macOS 15.3.1 and my local password stopped working. Luckily I was still able to use the fingerprint scanner to get in. I went into Terminal and used

sudo passwd 'John Doe'

Where 'John Doe' was my macOS user id. I had to put my user id in quotes because there was a space in it. I was still able to use my normal password to make sudo work. I entered my old password and then the same thing for my new password.

I got the following message

################################### WARNING ###################################
# This tool does not update the login keychain password. #
# To update it, run `security set-keychain-password` as the user in question, #
# or as root providing a path to such user's login keychain. #
###############################################################################

so I typed the following in Terminal

security set-keychain-password

and again I used my old password as the new password. After that my password worked normally again to log in and to get out of the screen saver.

I think that the Unix password and the Keychain password might be stored separately. Usually they're in sync, but the OS upgrade somehow messed up the Keychain password.

*problem solved * you actually need to put the verification code they gave you after the password * I need to upgrade my software from Yosemite to Big Sur (Early 2014 Macbook Air), but my Apple ID login keeps telling me I have the wrong password. Reset it several times, same error. This computer used a different Apple ID in the past, and I'm wondering if that is the issue? Is it confused, and how can I help it? I'm able to log in online (here and in iCloud). The problem is local and I haven't been able to upgrade for several software upgrades because of it. Now I'm so behind that Chrome isn't supported. Help!

Hey everyone,

Wifi wasn’t working on my MacBook so I decided to just restart. When it came to the Home Screen to login, I entered my usual password. Repeatedly, over and over again won’t work. The caps lock is not on, I know my password. Turned it on, restarted, did everything. Nothing. What exactly can I do here? I am not technology wise so please explain in simple terms if I have to do a long process. Thank youuu

I turned on my laptop and it was asking for a password. I entered it as usual and it said the password was wrong.

Oh, okay, I typed it again. Wrong password.

Then I typed slowly, checked every character, and it was wrong again.

I was 100% sure I was typing the correct password, but it wouldn’t let me login

ultimately i had to reset the password and now everything on my Mac is logged off wtf.

i understand that logging off inside apps is for security, but why was my password not working all of a sudden.

i had to change my password, log in everywhere again, and set up fingerprints again.

So I hold the power button to shut down my Mac this morning but neglect to turn it back on. Stupid move on my part, I know.

I come back home and restart my Mac, it takes me to the login screen where I typically have to enter my Apple ID password and then a little bar loads across the screen and then I’m back into my machine.

However, it doesn’t take what I know to be the correct password. And I don’t mean I tried it five times and got pissed, or I left caps lock on by accident, but I found where I’d written then password down and entered the same credentials that got me in yesterday, and the little thing shook and denied me. Repeated this many times, at no point does it prompt me to do anything, never accepts my password.

I tried to reset my Apple ID password to see if I could get in then- no dice. Just set this password so I know it’s correct. It’s been about half an hour since reset so I figured the system should have synced by now to know the credential change. Please let me know if I’m wrong on that (I hope I am)

Any advice? The only options I have from the screen I can get to is sleep, restart, and shut down. Nothing working, really need to use my machine and any guidance appreciated, I’d this isn’t the proper place please let me know

I have my laptop updated to MacOS Sequoia 15.3. and I was always able to log into my computer with the password I had for months. Coming back to my MacBook Pro M1 yesterday, it wouldn’t accept my device password, even though it was definitely correct. I tried it three times- same password cap locks ok, everything the same, and in the third try it accepted it. Then I loged off, and it didn’t work anymore, it did not let me in. I was able to use use my fingerprint, and immediately changed my password (using the password that it wouldn't accept in the lock screen!). And again, the lock screen won't accept my new (very simple) password. Nor the old one. I rebooted, and now I can't log in at all. It just won't accept my password. Now i am locked out and the last time I had to wait an hour to be able to try again. I tried everything, restarting command + R - doesn’t work - it just shows me my profile and password tab. Using my finger for password won’t work anymore, there is no option to change password and I didn’t have it connected to my Apple ID because I had no idea this could happen. So now what? I’m starting to think Apple does that on purpose. I checked online and the same thing happened to about 70 people. Anyways the closest Apple service centre is an hour away from me, and their reviews are so bad, I don’t even want to go near that place. How can I get out of this cycle? Does anyone else have the same issues? Youtube videos don’t work, I tried. I would appreciate some advice :(.

Hi all -

I'm hoping someone can guide me on this. Last night we changed my husband's Macbook login password (my PC was recently hacked). We wrote it down on a piece of paper. Today, when we go to login, it comes up as incorrect and gives us the password hint. I know you can reset this by using the apple ID, so I test out the apple ID and password by logging in to both itunes and icloud.com on my computer and both work. When I go back to the Mac to try and reset it using the Apple ID/Apple ID password, it shakes and indicates it is the wrong password. Any clue on why this is happening and is there any way to get back in? I'm stumped!

I forgot the password to my Macbook running Macos Monterey,

Looked up a guide on the internet, and it told me to just turn on recovery mode, go to the terminal, type in "reset password," and it'll work.
I did what it said, and surprisingly it worked, without any additional verification whatsoever. I checked that find-my was on in the settings, and the Apple ID was also logged in. Everything was left the same as before I shut down the computer.

This was very scary to know, making it seem that any person with knowledge of this trick would be able to gain access to any macOS computer. Am I doing/understanding anything wrong here?

Edit: fyi the computer was a 2016 MacBook Pro intel, without Touch Bar

I went abroad a few days ago, and my laptop was working fine the first day. I left it charging for like 5 hours today and when I came back, it was fully charged but suddenly it wouldn’t take my password. (I’m thinking it updated while I was gone? But idk).

It it also says I can reset using recovery key (on the login page), but I don’t remember ever making a recovery key.

I tried Command R, I tried restarting NVRAM, but I’ve had no success. When I get on the recovery page titled “Reset Password Failed”, it says “There are no users on this volume to recover.”

Last thing I remember doing on the laptop, I changed the time zone. Not sure if that affected it.

I’m getting really desperate because I need this for work, and the nearest Apple support here is a few hours away and I have important documents in there.

Thank you in advance for any help.
