I have 2 washable runners. I think washable rugs are only “okay” for small rugs. I’ve heard nightmares about the big ones including what you mentioned not fitting in washing machines (basically defeating the purpose) and being very difficult to lay down again. My runners fit in my washer just fine and clean well. However they are difficult to vacuum (I end up having to shake them out) and they curl on the edges because they are thin. My absolute favorite washable area rug solution is Flor tiles . They’re squares of carpet with rubber backing that you put together with large stickers, so they’re not super plush and might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but they can withstand anything! High traffic, dogs and cats, kids, kitchen spills. Over the last decade+, I’ve put them in my entryway, living room, kitchen, office, bedrooms, and garage gym and I’ve never been happier with a floor covering. I have a few Ruggables that I also like (the new higher pile tufted style is much better than the earlier version), but nothing beats Flor tiles for ease of cleaning or replacing.
