MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2019.
I wasn’t using this computer for a while and skipped macOS Ventura altogether. Now I plan to update to Sonoma, but would like to know if there are any downsides to consider.

Upgrading to Sonoma from Monterey without making a time machine backup was my biggest mistake. First, my startup time went from 10s (basically instant) to 1 whole minute before I could load into the desktop. No one else seems to be having this issue. I want to buy a new macbook to manage my music library in my living room. It will be connected to the Hi-Fi setup and will play music from Spotify, Apple Music (iTunes) and web pages (like web radios)
I've been looking at retina 2015 models :
I want the most recent mac possible but i'm also not super rich so i won't be buying anything new. I want at least a full Terabyte of SSD for my music library to fit properly and with some extra free space for the day spotify finally supports Lossless audio.
I'm also interested in it having the optical output which apple dropped by 2016
I see the 2015 will support monterey only, how long will i be able to use that ? Do you think it's possible to install something more recent on it without making it slow / loud.

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro 15 and a 2015 iMac 27. The latter cost me $200. They both run Monterey fine and there have been updates this year. I expect general updates to stop this fall and security updates only for a few more years. You can run OCLP to get newer operating systems. I did test this out on the 2015 MacBook Pro. I would pay at most $200 for a 2015 MacBook Pro or 2015 iMac.

Using a MBP mid 2014 and I just updated to BigSur as the older os don't get security updates. Runs fine with the quad core i7 and 16gig of ram.

July 8, 2024 - And let me tell you, the first time I tried it, I hated it (just like Catalina) because of some performance issues on both of my MacBooks, but there is some things I manage to disable in order to get the same performance as I have on Mojave, or at least try to get it, its not the exact same, but I think its justified, in fact, Monterey made me fell updated to the point where I found my alternative to Mojave or windows 8.1 if I need to update, it works, simple as that, It has the same improvements of Catalina and Big Sur with some great useful features that improved my workflow, in my opinion, one of the best versions of macOS.

Unless you plan on taking advantage of the features that are included in the macOS Monterey then I would say no. If you aren’t experiencing any issues of the computer running slow, battery drain issues, etc. I say to leave it as is if you're comfortable on the software.

For anyone still looking, the answer is a resounding no. I just attempted this to get some programs working. That worked, but then pages and all other apple provided apps broke. Apple has pages needing 14.0 or newer and is using that version instead of a compatible one. Much sad :(

Die Betriebssysteme werden langsam wieder deutlich besser und stabiler als sie mal waren ... Zum Vergrößern anklicken.... Ich muss das leider korrigieren, ich hatte das falsch im Kopf. macOS 10.15 Catalina wird noch unterstützt.
