By curiosity i looked up some scenes from this anime and let's just say i was not expecting that... However... the style of animation, the way things are animated, the designs of the monsters all intrigued me, especially the lore. And now im debating whether or not i should i watch it.

I’ve seen more anime's since i first watched made in abyss and idk if its just me but most of them felt more messed up than made in abyss like more gore and darker plots. It has me questioning if some people are making made in abyss seem darker than it actually is. I’d like to hear what the rest of the community thinks

tl;dr: I think that depends on the viewer. I see MiA as dark due to the interesting body horror and the no holds barred against children characters; it depicts the brutality of nature. Now when I look at something like AoT, 86, Chainsaw Man, or Overlord, Tokyo Ghoul, or Elfen Lied, it doesn't strike me as "dark." While there may be blood, gore, and dismemberment, it just seems run of the mill to me. But perhaps someone else may view a group being sent on what's supposed to be a suicide mission in 86 may find that more despairing despite my own personal feelings. Even in something like Puella Magi Madoka Magica, that's fairly dark but it still doesn't hit like MiA does, for me at least. Also looking at FMA which has some body horror in the creation of homunculus and overall gore and violence depicted in genocide, killing of innocents, and seeing eldritch horror in the gate, people, when talking about messed up scenes, mention Shou Tucker. Of course it involves a child and a pseudo-body horror scene. So I think how "dark" MiA is will depend on the viewer and what they can tolerate. For me, a combination of violence, body horror, and emotional torment is dark and hits hard. Anything else is just violence, nature, war, or something that can be seen IRL.

I think sadder is what people mean. Cuz honestly it's a very upbeat story beyond the tragedies. Cuz you are right. Elfen Lied is a billion times worse. Mirai Nikki. So many other shows. I think it's also people sell it on how dark it is because the main characters are children. The chibi art also makes it feel darker when the terrible stuff happens.
