Can someone sell me on what made the show/series good?
I haven't watch the anime nor do I know anything about the story aside from it being originally a manga series. But the anime made a lot of buzz when it came out and lots of people praised it. The only thing that stopped me from watching is the artstyle since I'm not big on overly cute/moe-ish design. Pretty shallow reason, I know.
So I'm curious on what made the fans of the show stick with the series. Is it the characters? Lore? The world? Or something else?
P.S: I know something dark happens since everyone won't stop yapping about it. I don't know what it is, so no spoilers!
Update 1 : Just wanna say, thank you all for your input :). I've started watching and I'm currently at episode 3. Along with some discussion piece by Semblance of Sanity. The first episode's really great! So far I'm enjoying this XD.

Personally the world building really did the job and got me reading the manga when I just finished the anime. The music is super good too.

July 30, 2022 - As a White Whistle, Bondrewd commands massive respect among all of society up on Orth, to the point that the orphans he collects willingly go with him down to the Abyss, even volunteering for the trip and without any clue of what’s in store for them. The newly transformed Nanachi witnessing pure horror, kept by Bondrewd as an assistant before escaping the facility with Mitty. The world that Riko, Reg, and Nanachi live in might be beautiful, but it’s also hard and unforgiving. This harsh aspect of the world is built up in a natural way from the beginning of Made in Abyss, so while seeing Riko bleeding from her eyes from the Curse and the horrific human experimentation carried out near the end of the season is terrible, it doesn’t come from nowhere and doesn’t really feel like it’s inserted just for shock value.

If you like fantasy-mystery series then this is a GREAT one, like one of the best fantasy mysteries currently going on. Reading the first manga chapters or watching the first episode is good enough as an introduction tbh. But here is an explanation without spoilers to any events: Simply put, you got this big hole , a really big hole , it's big enough to be considered a geographical landmark and big enough to sustain a civilization, it has its own flora and fauna and funga ,actually it is separated into layers and each layer has its own flora and fauna and funga and a different weather you can say We briefly understand at the start of the show there was some sort of a civilization living in this abyss and they left what we call relics: items that are capable of doing stuff that are considered magic compared to the level of technology in the world and therefore they are very valuable And here enter the cave delvers or cave raiders living in the city of the pit , they go down to challenge the "horrifying" dangers of the abyss and bring back those relics as they sell "very well" We follow riko a cave raider that is still a literal child but wants to go to the bottom of the abyss following her mother, a legendary cave raider Oh!! , and there is the curse ! an effect special to the abyss which triggers when you move up inside the abyss , the severity of the effect increases the lower the layer you are in I recommend watching season one , reading the manga from chapter 26 to the end of that arc , watching the movie then the first episode of s2 then reading the manga from where you left it until chapter 60 then watching s2 and finally reading chapters (61-70)(still un-adapted and there is more coming).

Okay so, in short sentences: there’s a big cursed hole in the ground; if you go up, bad things happens. people like this hole, full of resources and so mysteriously mysterious. backstory happens, Riko’s mom is very important. Riko is born, her mom leaves to explore the hole. the child yearns for the mines. Riko forcefully adopts Reg and uses his robot ass to get her ass further in the hole. she proceeds to almost die every 5 hours or so. Thankfully a furry named Nanachi comes to the rescue and finally provides the missing brain cell that the gang needed. Nanachi has a friend/love interest/waifu named Mitty, long story short Reg shoots her. the gang reaches Robotnik’s lair, home of Best Dad, where Reg’s arm is cut off, Nanachi discovers PTSD, but who cares cause Riko gets a new friend: Prushka! Prushka is then turned into a juice box and a whistle for Riko to wear. … Friendship prevails once again! Moving on! after Robotnik’s lair no one can go back up alive, so now they can only go down. They eventually find a village, this village is actually a transformed human, in this village Mitty was cloned (Nanachi’s second experience with PTSD) and Reg is kidnapped and hired by a furry named Faputa to help destroy the place, which he reluctantly agrees. After the place is razed to the ground and thousands have died Faputa is forcefully adopted into the gang, which brings us to today, where the gang was helped by another group of delvers to reach further down in the hole. And nothing bad has happened ever since, Nanachi is going to be fiiiine
