The Magic Mouse 2 uses a lithium ion battery and generally speaking those have a useful life of 3 to 5 years1.

That said, it's important to note that:

  • Apple products (including accessories) have a 1 year warranty
  • Only accessories included with a Mac computer are covered under AppleCare. In other words, if you buy AppleCare for your iMac that includes the Magic Mouse, it's covered. It won't cover it if you bought the mouse separately (like with a MacBook)

From personal experience, I've had rechargeable batteries in a Logitech Mouse last the better part of a decade and brand new batteries (genuine OEM) from Dell and Apple fail after a year. YMMV. (your mileage may vary)

1Manufacturers' information typically specify lifespan in terms of the number of cycles (e.g., capacity dropping linearly to 80% over 500 cycles), with no mention of chronological age.[162] On average, lifetimes consist of 1000 cycles,[163] although battery performance is rarely specified for more than 500 cycles. This means that batteries of mobile phones, or other hand-held devices in daily use, are not expected to last longer than three years. Some batteries based on carbon anodes offer more than 10,000 cycles.[164]

What is the lifespan of Apple Magic Mouse? - Quora
Answer (1 of 8): I still have my original Magic Mouse from 2006. It’s in good working order, along with my newer, but still first generation of Magic Mouse from 2014, both of which I got with iMac purchases. As with previous answers I’d attribute their longevity to the fact that they take AA bat...

How long does an apple magic mouse last, … - Apple Community
December 22, 2016 - After about 2 ½ years, my apple magic mouse started losing its connection. None of the steps listed in apple support fixed the problem, and I had to go back to my old USB mouse. Is this a question of life expectancy, planned obsolescence, or what?
People also ask

How long does magic mouse battery last?
The Magic Mouse 1, powered by AA batteries, can last for months depending on the battery quality. In contrast, the Magic Mouse 2 has a built-in rechargeable battery with a general lifespan of a month per charge and 3 to 5 years overall before the battery performance typically starts to decline.

Why is my Magic Mouse battery dying so fast?
For Magic Mouse 1, using high-quality lithium-ion or rechargeable NiMH batteries can improve longevity. Magic Mouse 2's rechargeable battery may degrade with age or intensive use. Proper charging practices can help maintain battery health for both models.

r/macbookpro on Reddit: Magic Mouse Battery Life
February 20, 2023 -

I recently bought a new mac and a new magic mouse. I plugged in the mouse to the mac and charged it up. When it reached a 100%, I unplugged it. I read that the mouse goes into sleep mode when not in use. The Battery only lasted about 3 weeks. That seems short to me. Is that the average for the magic mouse battery?

Lithium ion battery life is specified by manufacturers in number of CYCLES, that translates in 3-5 Years.

The 3 to 5 Yr a very large gap. WHY?

The reason for it is because the life span depends on USAGE.

Degradation

Over their lifespan, batteries degrade progressively with reduced capacity, cycle life, and safety due to chemical changes to the electrodes. Capacity loss/fade is expressed as a percentage of initial capacity after a number of cycles (e.g., 30% loss after 1,000 cycles). Fade can be separated into calendar loss and cycling loss. Calendar loss results from the passage of time and is measured from the maximum state of charge. Cycling loss is due to usage and depends on both the maximum state of charge and the depth of discharge.[95] Increased rate of self-discharge can be an indicator of internal short-circuit.[165]

Degradation is strongly temperature-dependent, with a minimal degradation around 25°C, i.e., increasing if stored or used at above or below 25 °C.[166] High charge levels and elevated temperatures (whether from charging or ambient air) hasten capacity loss.[167] Carbon anodes generate heat when in use. Batteries may be refrigerated to reduce temperature effects.

r/mac on Reddit: After 15 wonderful years of service, my original Magic Mouse has finally given up
February 17, 2025 -

I spent most of that time using really crap rechargeable Energizer batteries that required constant swapping. About a decade in, the springs at the positive end weren’t making good contact, so I added some solder to them to improve the connection, which proved to be a necessary procedure about twice per year. Some plastic got melted along the way, many falls from table height were had, the locking spring stopped springing, and the right light now reveals a thousand micro scratches, but I’m glad I held out through the USB-C transition.

Basically the mouse just can’t sustainably hold a connection anymore. For a long time, I thought the problem was my 2018 mac mini (and I do still think my mini has Bluetooth connectivity problems), but it recently became clear that the mouse was to blame.

The profile does seem ever so slightly different, and the edges are sharper, but it’s hard to know if those are changes over time are from Apple or me.

Overall, I’m proud that I’ve stuck with the best mouse in the world, and I’m still sad that the best mouse in the world is terrible, if only for showing us what a mouse could be.
