Every other week I see posts like those which are saying it's the dumbest design decision to place the charging plug underneath of the Magic Mouse.
I'm a product designer and I want to tell you, why it's in fact the opposite.
First of all: The first Magic Mouse had removable batteries and wasn't charged with a cable. When Apple made the Magic Keyboard 2 with non-removable batteries, it was also time for the Magic Mouse to get rid of the batteries, because products with removable batteries were already outdated. But Apple is known for not changing the whole design if it's not really necessary!
And this is the important part:
If you look at the Magic Mouse you can see there is no place for a plug in front without changing the whole design. Making a whole redesign needs more development and it would lead to a bigger, heavier and less aesthetically mouse for a little feature that will be used only once in a month: charging it a few minutes. Would it be a rational thought to invest a lot into a new redesign that doesn't really change anything what the actual design already does? Is there a big downside of the actual solution except from it, that it looks a little bit stupid? I don't think so.
Therefor it's better to have a plug underneath that looks a bit stupid but accomplishes the same feature as if the plug would be in front: charging it a few minutes per month.
Even if it doesn't look like the best decision, it therefor is. Maybe not from your superficial perspective but from Apple's perspective.
