I know this is an old post, but I have the same problem every time my battery is totally drained on my 16” M1 Max as well. I took it to the Genius Bar and they ran diagnostics and updated firmware and it worked fine of course in the store… So they said to come back if it does it again. I’ve just been using a USB C cable instead as a workaround since it’s not super convenient to go back for them to tell me it’s fine… But taking a video will help and showing them this thread. It only does it when it’s fully drained, it’ll charge using MagSafe if there’s still some power in the battery. It’s frustrating on a brand new $4k CTO laptop, I’ve had less than 6 months. r/applehelp on Reddit: MagSafe 3 flashing orange and not charging my BRAND NEW MacBook Pro.
April 14, 2022 -
I literally just unboxed my sealed 16 inch MacBook Pro earlier today and everything worked fine. I set it up and that drained some of my battery so I charged it with the included MagSafe charger and it worked fine. A few hours later I try to charge it again and it gives me a flashing orange light and won’t charge. Luckily I have a usb c cable that charges it just fine with the block that was included but I don’t know what the problem is. Is it the cable? If so how could it get messed up within 3 hours of sitting in the desk unplugged? Maybe the MagSafe port? I’m not sure but anything helps thanks.
Info- 2021 MacBook Pro on Mac OS Monterey 12.3.1 3 power cycles, charging status: no. (Even though plugged into MagSafe)

Try an SMC reset. If that changes nothing then you have a hardware issue could be the charger, the DC-in port or the battery is bad. · Replacing the charger would be the easiest cheapest place to begin. · If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it accepted.

The 140W charger and the Magsafe 3 that came with that charger will charge any Magsafe 3 macbooks normally. If the magsafe 3 head blinks orange and its the original that came with the charger, then try cleaning the Magsafe 3 port with a microfiber towel and some isopropanol.

January 11, 2022 - I think "the workaround" is to do this: - connect the MagSafe - if there's a flashing yellow, open the lid and let the MBP power up - now, shut it down and then close the lid Does doing it this way change anything? Easy fix is always to clean out the MagSafe charging port to get rid of anything that might prevent a good connection. Use a generous amount of mild cleaner and a small brush to scrub out anything that shouldn’t be there.
