Tool review - Makita BO5041 orbital sander
IMO, Makita has consistently made quality tools for a long time. I still have a 2030 jointer/planer combo that runs great, ascwell as drills, polisher, grinder, routers, and an old contractor TS with base and fence as accessories that has to be over 20 yesrs old. More on reddit.com

January 15, 2021 - I am a fan of the Bosch RO. The Makita is a pretty slick machine too. Although I love Milwaukee I've never used their sander.

r/woodworking on Reddit: Tool review - Makita BO5041 orbital sander
May 27, 2017 -

So, I've had a deWalt 421 ROS for a long time, and I never particularly loved it. Recently, the plastic bit that connects the dust bag to the sander bit the dust, so I figured it was an opportunity for an upgrade. I picked up a factory reconditioned Makita BO5041 for about $70 including tax and shipping.

Dewalt cons:

  • Single speed

  • Jerks when turned on

  • Has a strong tendency to want to "walk" on it's own, and it has no additional handle to make it easier to control

Dewalt pros:

  • Rugged, aside from the dust bag bit that finally came apart

  • Seems reasonably powerful

Makita cons:

  • What is this, a dust port for ants? Seriously, the dust port is 3/4 inches, so hooking it up to a shop vac for better dust collection is going to be interesting

Makita pros:

  • Variable speed, soft start, and trigger lock

  • Doesn't tend to wander; even single-handing this, it's far easier to keep it where you want it than the dewalt

  • Movable and removable handle for using 2nd hand - this is really nice, because you can put the handle where you want it, or remove it so it's entirely out of your way.

  • Also seems rugged

Anyhow, after using the makita for a while, I'm seriously impressed at how much nicer to use it is than the dewalt. The big deals are the variable speed and controllability. There's a reason it's more expensive, but getting a factory refurb unit, it's not much more expensive.

Makita BO5041/2 240V Random Orbit Sander : Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 September 2023 Can’t believe how good this sander is. Bought as we have a large solid wood outdoor table that has suffered in our Scottish weather and also have a lot of woodwork to rub down indoors. It’s a bit of an investment, but so worth it for the quality of the finish and the reduction in time spent. I used a tradition orbital sander in the past, which took ages and gave mediocre results. This Makita sander has made all the difference.

January 2, 2017 - Once you start to use it you will realise that you DO NOT want that handle at all that comes with the bo5041. If you want 150mm sander ( 44% increase in area it covers VS 125mm sander) go for Metabo sxe450 instead of that makita as It's a much much much better sander for only about £10 more- Just make sure that it's the newer Turbotec model. ... The Metabo SXE 450 seems to get great reviews.

July 19, 2022 - Id; go with the makita, The festool wont last any longer and parts will likely be more expensive. You could always check the price of a replacement pad and see if the paper is the same. I have a 6 inch rigid one, decent machine but the 6" paper is less common and more expensive.

Best 5" Random Orbital Sander Under $100 in 2024 – SERIOUS GRIT
April 4, 2023 - Dust collection is okay, but it's a soft bag that can be hard to clean and the dust collection port is quite small so you'll need an adapter to hook it up to a vacuum. Another drawback is the lack of a variable speed control which can make delicate work tougher. If you need the variable speed control, Home Depot also carries the Makita BO5041, which runs $99.

August 2, 2019 - So instead of $60, I spent $80 on the Makita. It was a good move. Obviously I can't comment on its longevity yet, but it's much smoother, quieter, and it has way way way better dust collection.
