r/geography on Reddit: Why is Malaysia's Population small compared to most other SEA Countries?
October 28, 2023 -
I wonder why Malaysia has a small population (33 million) compared to Thailand (71 Million), Mynmmar (54 Million), Vietnam (97 Million), and Indonesia (273 Million) with Java alone (145 Million) and Sumatra (60 Million) and the Philippines ( 113 Million) all despite
- Hot and Wet Climate
- Mostly Islamic meaning higher birth rates
-Yet even that 33 Million is inflated as roughly a third of the population are descendants of large-scale British Labour imports in the 1800s and 1900s especially from China and to a lesser extent India

I think part of the reason is because Malaysia consists mainly of jungles that are poor for farming. Only 2.9% of Malaysia's land is arable, which is the lowest in southeast Asia. In the modern day Malaysia can use technology to increase their agricultural output and also import food. But historically it's population would be seriously limited by a small food supply. For comparison here are the arable land statistics for neighboring countries: Malaysia: 2.9% Vietnam: 20.6% Indonesia: 13% Myanmar: 16.5% Philippines: 18.2% Cambodia: 22.7% So yeah Malaysia is at a serious disadvantage agriculturally speaking.
