r/orangecounty on Reddit: Is it wise to drive up to this point on the Maple Springs Truck Trail with my 2004 Camry? I am a hiker wanting to hike to Santiago Peak from this point. How is the road right now?
May 5, 2023 - I'd suggest that you look at this report: https://hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/hiking-orange-county/hike-santiago-peak-modjeska-peak-from-maple-springs/ The Hiking Guy has an excellent report on this trail. Includes photos of just about everything you would need to know. Basically, you drive up to the first hairpin turn past the gate and park on you left. Past that point would be a bit rough to take in your Camry. There were quite a few people driving their high clearance vehicles up the truck trail while we were hiking.

Santiago Peak via Maple Springs
You'll follow the route out to a specific point, and then retrace your steps to return to the start. The length of the trail refers to the entire route — traveling out and back on this route covers 9.6 mi. ... The drive to the start of this is along the Maple Springs Truck Trail. The drive to the start of this is along the Maple Springs Truck Trail. I would rate the road as beginner/novice level. Clearance suggested, 4WD optional. First 3 miles are paved, next 4 to this parking area are dirt. Very busy road with deer hunters and weekend off-roaders. The rest of the hike is on dirt roads. Ther

Santiago Peak via Maple Springs Visitor Center
Santiago Peak via Maple Springs Visitor Center is considered a hard hike that covers 24 mi, with an elevation gain of 4,130 ft. It takes about 11.5–12.5 hr to complete. Hard trails usually cover longer distances, and may have long or steep climbs or more difficult obstacles. I started this MTB ride at the end of the Maple Springs paved section, which cuts off about 6 miles off your ride. The road was gradual most of the way and easily bikeable, just you have to watch out for cars coming down and up. There were some nice views throughout, and the road through the Airport Fire burn scar was full

Maple Springs Truck Trail | Trabuco/Orange County CA | Easy | 29 April 2022 | Club Touareg Forum
The left-most fork from the turnaround is a very steep, rocky, tractionless challenge mode incline to a small antenna of some kind, nonetheless fun to climb in low gear with center locked, very slow and like 1mpg lol. The middle route is rocky but easier, and they both merge after that little rocky hill and continue on to the same place, Modjeska Peak. The option to the right, the main trail (known as Saddleback Saddle), goes up on to Santiago Peak.

The first half of the road is paved with some possible mild water crossings and the second half is dirt. Most trucks and SUVs should be able to make it to Maple Springs Junction without the use of a 4x4 low-gear.

October 18, 2012 - I've done the peak many times and Holy Jim is brutal and not fun to the peak. The main divide part of the climb sucks. Loose, rocky and steep. There are primarily 3 main main ways in the OC; HolyJim, Maple Spring and Harding Truck Trail. Maple Springs is the easiest (IMO), but I personally ...
