How to Install a Marble Tile Backsplash | HGTV
September 17, 2018 - Begin applying full tiles where the backsplash meets the countertop. Most likely, the tiles that border the bottom of the cabinets will need to be cut, which won't be a problem because cut tiles here will be less visible. As you apply sheets of tile, slide spacers under the bottom row of tile to create a gap that later will be filled with caulk. Tip: It's better to caulk, rather than grout, this bottom line to allow for cabinets shifting with normal floorboard movement.

I'm trying to find backsplash tiles that my husband and I both like which is not easy. The ones we agree on most are marble. I'm looking for shorter tile approx 2x6in. Polished picket or similar that has variations of white. I'm worried about having to seal marble and possible staining. If you have a marble backsplash, do you regret it? I'm wondering if I should keep searching for ceramic or porcelain.

DON'T DO IT I had these marble tiles I LOVEd as backsplash. I sealed them all the time. It didn't matter. The heat from the range damaged the ones around the stove and the water damaged the ones behind the sink no matter what I did. I hate marble backsplash and marble countertops with heat of a ten thousand suns :) Here is a photo. Look behind the stove top ( I sold this house in March and got quartz for countertops and backsplash in the new one).

In general marble is a complete nightmare when it comes to staining. I had a bathroom sink counter that was marble and we ripped it out one year after installing it. Everything stained that thing despite sealing it. It’s undoubtedly gorgeous, but you have to ask yourself if you want to use a notoriously high-maintenance material in an area of the house that is high risk for colorful splashes of tomato sauce, curry, wine, oils, etc. There are so many materials now that come very close to the natural beauty of marble without the headache.
