r/marketing on Reddit: Marketing Budget Allocation
August 9, 2023 -
Hi all - I'm knee deep in the midst of 2024 budget planning.
My company is an exterior remodeling company and I'm trying to determine how much I should be allocating for each marketing sub-category.
I know we want to spend at least 50% on digital marketing, but unsure about the rest. We're in a growth phase so increasing revenue YoY is the primary goal.
How are your budgets allocated? I'm looking to compare and weigh different ideas. Thanks for reading and I sincerely appreciate anyone responding!

I look at what we spent last year (actuals) versus what we forecasted. Next year's budget is almost always close to what we spent the previous year, though we may have some room to increase it. Then, I talk to my stakeholders to figure out our business objectives. But, before I even start budgeting, I put together a marketing plan based on the business objectives. For example, there could be five business objectives and I'll create five strategies aligned to those objectives. Another example, the company wants to increase net new customers, or the company wants to increase sales with past customers. I'd come up with a strategy for each of those with individual tactics underneath. Each tactic would also include KPIs (I.e., $X generated from digital campaign). Ultimately, I'd suggest taking a step back and building out your marketing plan (if you haven't done so already), then focus on the dollars last. Let me know if you have any questions.

You should be spending as much as you can to acquire the most amount of customers. Meaning, your marketing strategy should be producing low cost leads or better, break even leads, or best profitable leads. You should look at your numbers from last year and determine what traffic sources had the lowest CPL, CPA and highest ROI. You need to track everything and look at the data to answer these questions
