r/marriott on Reddit: Wishing I had known how Marriott is making their free night award certificates less valuable before I signed up for Marriott Bonvoy Boundless.
September 27, 2022 -
Signed up for the card on the last day of the 5 free nights offer - finally got my certificates and I'm finding it hard to book or gain access to "even more Hotel and Resort options across our 30 distinctive Brands." It seems deliberate how many of their nicer hotels are only 5K points out of reach (after "topping off" to 65K). Seeing London and Paris hotels going for 70K per night on average.
Any advice is much appreciated.

It’s a $95 annual fee credit card. Did you really expect to get 5 free nights of luxurious hotels with a fairly minimal spend requirement? Compare it to now - 100,000 points. Now that makes sense. But 5 free nights of 50,000, so 250,000 points?? (Or 200,000 points if you count the 5th night free). That’s insanely good! With a value of $0.007 per point, that’s $1,750 (or $1,400 for 5th night free). For a $95 card. How could you possibly claim that that’s not good enough? That’s a better deal than any $695, $650, or any other annual fee priced card. For the boujee hotel, someone has to pay for all those employees and other services. Are they gonna recoup that from someone with a $95 card? Statistically no.

The point creep is annoying and was the first thing every-one said would happen if you were allowed to "top-off" your certs but since variable rates exist you should be able to find dates where you can use em.
