So I’ve tried skillshare before, mostly because of the generous free trial and it’s ok. The biggest issue is that almost everything is beginner level, so once you’re past a certain threshold it stops being useful, but if you use a free trial than no harm in checking out the courses, I’d just say don’t expect anything near the level of a coach, more on the level of a longer and slightly more in-depth YouTube video. r/MasterClass on Reddit: Does Masterclass actually teach you any software tools to do X activity?
February 4, 2024 -

Hi! I want to learn ecommerce.Do the classes on Masterclass actually teach you at least 1 ecommerce, social media marketing, or digital tool to do anything?

I feel like they're just talking and talking, and not putting their hands in action, at least in some courses, not all.

For example, the music ones, do they go over hardware set=up and do they teach you how to use it, or is it theoretical and not hands on? If it isn't hands-on, then it's basically the same as many college courses, it's all chit-chat and no real life use-cases.

Update: I'm checking CretiveLive and Skillshare yearly subscriptions, $99 per year and $129 per year, respectively. MasterClass is just the most popular of this kind of learning model and apparently, it's not even that in-deep for the most part. Even Garry Kasparov and the poker guys seem to have put more actionable content, and it's just to play a game, compared to the masters in other topics at Masterclasses, lol

MasterClass vs. Skillshare: Which Site Fits Your Learning Goals Better? | PCMag
April 15, 2022 - My point is that comparing Skillshare and MasterClass directly is difficult, and a more fruitful exercise would be to point out how they're different and under which conditions you might choose one over the other. Yes, they both nominally offer online classes, but the two companies use the word "class" in different ways.

r/Advice on Reddit: Would You Use a Platform for Learning Through Micro-Videos and Mentorship?
November 26, 2024 -

Hey Reddit!

I’m building a platform where you can learn new skills through short, expert-led micro-videos and connect with mentors to collaborate on real projects.

The idea is simple:

Quick learning: Bite-sized videos to teach you actionable skills.

Portfolio-building: Collaborate with experts and showcase your work.

Networking: Connect with mentors and like-minded learners to grow your skills.

What do you think? Would something like this help you grow your skills or career?

I’d love your feedback—what features would make you want to use this?

Thanks for helping me shape this idea!

r/MotionDesign on Reddit: Is skillshare worth it?
September 28, 2023 -

I am a 2D motion designer looking to improve my craft by learning frame by frame and C4D to get into a nice studio, I don't have the time to deal with a full on course from school of motion (I did 2 and they are very time intensive, also pricey), do you all think skillshare could be a good alternative? I would just like more structure - I learnt most of what I know by YouTube and it was a bit overwhelming to begin with, and then when I took the school of motion and domestika courses they were more helpful as you were guided through. As I want to widen my horizons I thought getting a more versatile platform would be best.

Is it worth it in this case? I read there is a bit of a bad rep of skillshare online regarding pricing and customer service, so wanted to know what you all think or if you have any other suggestion! Thanks!

This is my take on online elearning and all the platforms/paths available. I look at where the courses come from. Some platforms, like Skillshare and Udemy, allow basically anyone to put up a course. So I can't be sure of the quality unless I do more research. I'm more familiar with Skillshare, so I can tell you there ARE some good classes, but no set certificate programs or curricula since the classes are made by individuals. You have you hunt and choose what you want to learn. Others, like Coursera, offer courses/certificates that are sometimes linked to universities or businesses (I'm specifically thinking about Google's recent new career certificates). I feel like those might be more accepted professionally and they follow set curricula with specific learning objectives and goals. Then there are other platforms that are just generally well-known as tech learning platforms, like Udacity and Treehouse. Those are generally good for learning new skill sets, but I'm not sure how accepted (or important) the end certificates are to future employer. If you're actually LEARNING the skills though, that's what is most important. They also follow set curricula with learning objectives and goals. So I guess it all depends on what YOU are looking for in a course. Some things to consider: Is it built by an individual, university or company? If it's built by an individual, who? Do they know what they're talking about? Self-paced or on a more formal schedule? Recognized certificate? Set curriculum (treehouse, udacity) or individual classes? Is it theory only or are there practical projects?
