He manages to make his face move in entirely different ways when playing Tom. It's really impressive, maybe even more so if you've also seen him in any of his other work, too, and how varied his roles are (which I highly recommend you do — especially an indie film called "in my fathers den")
Dude has the range.

I remember showing Succession to my sister for the first time and she asked “is that…. Mr. Darcy?” And I said yep! She just sat there and said, “wow, I didn’t know he could play such a wiener. He’s amazing.”

I think of that movie often. He’s incredible as Tom. He plays who Tom thinks he is and who we understand Tom to be simultaneously.

The Best of…Matthew MacFadyen – Movies on Weekends
April 13, 2020 - MacFadyen as Athos is fantastic – an iconic long-haired Lothario and a truly magnificent hero. It is a bit of a bonkers adaptation but it is such a certified romp that you’ll be swept away with this heroic tale. A movie that certainly made him an icon. Though people perhaps know Mr. Darcy best as a drenched Colin Firth emerging from the water, there are many who prefer MacFadyen’s dashing portrayal in Joe Wright’s adaptation.

November 23, 2025 - Matthew Macfayden in 'Stonehouse' staring back towards the camera while sitting at a small desk.Image via ITV · Stonehouse dramatizes the bizarre real-life scandal of British MP John Stonehouse, who attempted to fake his own death while desperately trying to escape political and financial ruin. This is one of the most recent instances where Macfadyen stars alongside his real-life partner, Keeley Hawes, who portrays Stonehouse's wife. Macfadyen's performance is top-notch as he embodies a delusional and hilariously inept politician, so convinced of his own importance that he fails at disappearing.
