Bed in a Box vs. Traditional Mattresses | City Mattress
Special machinery, first invented by Bill Bradley in 2007, compresses the mattress into a manageable size so it can be quickly shipped to your door in — yes, you guessed it — a box. And because they’re compressed, they’re also easy to get into your room. So there’s no need for heavy lifting or maneuvering around tight corners. Instead, simply unbox and unroll your new mattress, which will pop into shape within an allotted period. Shop Our Bedroom Furniture · Deciding whether to go with a traditional mattress type or a bed in a box involves considering several factors, including price, convenience, comfort, support, quality and lifespan.

Mattress in a Box vs Traditional: Key Differences
What are the drawbacks of a mattress in a box?
While mattresses in a box offer convenience and lower cost, they do come with a few trade-offs. Off-gassing (that “new foam” smell) is common at first, and you won’t get to test the feel before buying. Some models may not last as long due to compression or lower-density foam. They also need the right kind of base — solid or slatted — for proper support.

How long will a mattress in a box last?
With proper care, a mattress in a box can last anywhere from 7 to 10 years — about the same as a traditional mattress. Durability mostly depends on materials and build quality. Higher-end models with dense foam or coil layers tend to hold up better in the long run.

We want to get the Sealy posturepedic hybrid from mattress firm which does not come in a box and is $400 more expensive than the “same” one at Costco for less but comes in a box and different labeling.
