Check under the Management tab in Jamf and look for the Activation Lock Bypass Code. You should be able to use that, after restoring the computer, to bypass the Activation Lock and activate the computer. Also, if you computer is in Apple Business Manager, Apple will accept that as Proof of Purchase if you open a ticket to remove the Activation Lock. Answer from MacBook_Fan on reddit.com

r/MacOS on Reddit: MDM Key for MacBook
October 11, 2020 -

Hello, We're in a situation and we can not move forward. Long story short, My friend's son has passed away and we can not open his devices. He had a MacBook and iPhone. We stuck on the activation lock or use the MDM key. My friend doesn't know his son's password. We contacted apple several times to help up reset the password for his iCloud or remove the activation lock.

They requested proof of purchase which we did provide them and nothing after that. No email is been sent or nothing. Support doesn't help, every time we call they apologize and ask as to re-submit the request again. For over 2 months and nothing... Any help we greatly appreciate it.

r/macsysadmin on Reddit: Remove activation lock with MDM?
March 21, 2024 -

Is it possible to remove activation lock from a device using the MDM? In this case, the MDM is Jamf. The device was configured using “Find My” with a personal iCloud account and the device key in Jamf doesn’t appear to be working. Also, how could I prevent users from enabling “Find My” with a personal account moving forward?

From what I am seeing, I have to go to Apple with proof of purchase, but wanted to confirm before doing so.

r/MacOS on Reddit: MDM Lock Removed
January 17, 2025 -

Hey everyone,

Long story short: I'm a college student who bought an MDM-locked MacBook. I contacted the IT department, and fortunately, they were able to remove the lock. However, they mentioned that it takes a couple of days for the removal to take effect. It’s been two days, and I still see the MDM lock. After sifting Reddit, many users suggested erasing the MacBook and reinstalling the operating system, which is what I’m currently doing. The OS is updating now. Does this mean the MDM lock is gone?

r/macbook on Reddit: How to remove MDM from MacBook?
April 10, 2025 -

Yo!

I worked for a medium sized tech startup that went bankrupt about a year and a half ago. There was no notice and the entire company was laid off with no severance, while numerous c suite executives and the founder moved to a new company to try the same idea and restart.

I have a company issued MacBook that I just recently started to use. An old coworker has been using hers since the layoff so I figured I’d give mine a go. There’s no way for me to return it as the company no longer exists. We were all fully remote and no emails sent out regarding a return and I was not able to reach anyone shortly after the layoff to ask.

There’s an MDM profile that was setup when I first received the laptop. I’ve been using the laptop just fine for the past couple of days (browsing the web, downloading web browsers, etc) but was wondering if there was a way to remove the MDM and have the laptop be completely ‘old company’ free.

Apologies if this is not the best place to ask, I’ve rarely ever used Mac’s before so I’m pretty basic with all of this stuff.

Appreciate any help or opinions.

EDIT: I found a link from another post, followed the steps and bypassed the MDM completely. No more profiles on the computer and from what I’ve read, can now update / use iCloud and everything else as a normal Mac could.

December 10, 2021 - IT department just needs to remove the serial number from their enrollment profile, and or remove the Mac from their Apple Business Manager account. By the way, if you connected to your home internet, the company now has your IP address (if you care). That Mac is constantly reporting back to the MDM with updated information (while connected to the internet).

r/mac on Reddit: Got scammed. MacBook Pro 16 M1 Activate locked with option Activate Mac with MDM key. Question!
March 29, 2024 -

Hey there. I bought a Used MacBook Pro 16 M1. (THERE WAS NO iCLOUD ACCOUNT, I logged with my one, that was safe to buy I thought).

Used it a few days, then decided to put my old one's mac backup to it.

Restored my new one. Now the funniest part... MacBook booted and I got Activation Locked screen with other iCloud. There's a few options:

*iCloud password ( not mine )

*to activate with mdm key (which is new shit for me, I do not know what's that)

*Erase mac... (nothing changes)

*I could choose start up disk.

My seller's phone is off ofc.

So I made a call to Apple. They said that "You could take it to the police IF YOU WANT." Whaat? If You want? They really do not care to find the real owner. That was what I offered for Apple support.

So now I have a question: Any chance to do something with it now or throw it out?

September 27, 2023 -

The one I have is currently on Ventura and stuck at the remote management step. After trying some of the other workarounds like disabling wifi which didn’t work, I thought I’d give checkm8 a try. Since Ventura isn’t supported by checkm8 I was going to downgrade the OS to Monterey using bootable media. Looking for anyone with suggestions of experience with this on if it works and how reliable it is.

November 8, 2024 - It wasn’t so they removed the MDM for me. Then I got the padlock symbol on the screen, after a few attempts they gave me a key which didn’t worked. What did worked was a simple password 123456. But it could have ended with a brick. ... Hilarious that they used 123456. Glad they did that 🤣 ... Some tech company from Chicago, I think my MacBook showed a message and even provided a phone number.
