You could build your own too. Very fun and rewarding, and you could customise it perfectly to your liking. I built my current keyboard and I loved it and it’s the most perfect keyboard for me as I’ve personalised it completely both functionally and aesthetically. The folks over at r/MechanicalKeyboards will definitely be able to help. Answer from CompoundAce on reddit.com

I’m looking to get an external keyboard for my iPad Pro 12,9. One side tells me to sensible and get the magic keyboard, but then there is this voice in the back of my head to get a nice mechanical keyboard instead.

Does anyone have a mechanical keyboard and dared to share some experiences

I’m looking to switch my ipad smart keyboard folio for a nice desk stand and a neat mechanical keyboard. I’m going to use my folio case only when I’m taking my iPad oustide, but mostly my iPad is sitting home.

For me having an iPad stand and a mechanical keyboard is much a better choice than buying the new magic keyboard for those who just let their ipads at home.

I have replaced my macbook pro 2015 for my iPad because it’s much more convenient as just you unplug the iPad and bring it to the bed.

My ideal setup:

  • iPad pro with USB-C hub

  • iPad stand (with adjustable height)

  • Bluetooth mouse: Logitech G703 or MX master 3?

  • Mechanical keyboard: YMD75, GK64, GK61, Anne Pro 2, Tofu65 (Out of stock :(.. )

  • Looking for an iPad cooler as well, as it cools down when I’m gaming (Fornite), because of heat issues iPad dims the display to prevent overheating the device.

IF ANYONE is using their mechanical keyboard with iPad I have a few questions:

  • does your control, option, command key works with iPad?

  • what about arrow keys when using Anne Pro for example, do u press FN to use arrow keys and do they work?

  • tell me your details about using a mechanical kb :)

THANK YOU.

I use my iPad in the kind of config sometimes. I use the USB-C hub for drives and more commonly Ethernet when at clients without WiFi. I also use it when messing with my own WiFi.

I use the TwelveSouth Compass stand which is fantastic. It’s not adjustable in height exactly, but well worth a look.

I use the MX Master 2 with the Mac, but much prefer the Magic Trackpad gestures with the iPad. Highly recommended.

I haven’t had any head issues other than in direct sunlight, so can’t help there, but I can help with the Keyboard.

Use the Anne Pro 2. Control, Option, Command, Escape... they all work great. I use arrow keys in 2 different ways. I use the “Tap Layer” to use the FN1, FN2, Carl & Right Shift as arrows when I just tap them (without holding them, and without additional modifiers). For holding, or using modifiers I use WASD with the Caps Lock key set as FN1 also. It works really well, though some more complex actions can occasionally be a little odd, but I’m about the only person that uses those.

All in, I love this configuration. If there is anything I can help with or test for you, just let me know.

I use a Bluetooth modded HHKB with my iPad Pro. It works great especially since I have the ability to map the keys anywhere I like. I usually use this set up when I’m home and stationary, but on the go, nothing can beat the folio keyboard in terms of weight and portability. Currently using an MX ergo, but thinking about investing into the Magic Trackpad 2 for my iPad Pro.

Hello there, I own an 11 inch iPad Pro M4, which I have been feeling the need of a keyboard lately to do the likes of typing, studying, gaming, editing, making montages, and so much more. But I have been wondering if I should buy the magic keyboard followed with an external mouse, or a regular keyboard and mouse. I also want to know if the magic keyboard is good for editing and gaming or if the regular keyboard would be better. And I also Don't care about how much I'm gonna pay for those things since they are essencial for me. Help will be greatly appreciated.

June 7, 2020 - Look for "iPad battery keyboard stand" on tinkercad. Then you can change to fit other keyboards. ... Nerd alert 🚨- kidding. ... People should not be allowed to legally own 40% keyboards... ... Especially not with a bare PCB. I have to be careful not to place the keyboard on a coin! ... Looks horrid. Why not get a logitech keyboard case to get the job done ... I wanted to be able to use in landscape/portrait, with extra battery, mechanical keyboard, and useable on the lap.

December 1, 2021 - Working on documents! I have two mechanical keyboards, as well as a keyboard case on my iPad. If i need to sit down and actually type something on my iPad, I will connect one of the keyboards to it as it is infinitely better than the shallow keyboards made for iPads

r/ipad - Mechanical keyboard?
May 19, 2015 -

Hey everyone, I'm doing some research for my mom. She's totally blind and uses an iPad Mini with VoiceOver like a champ. Thing is, she wants to write and to stop having to dictate emails. She's had a garbo Windows 8 laptop for years that she'd do her long-form writing on, but that finally bit it.

I let her try my Apple keyboard and she hates it. She hates the chiclet-like keys and how flat it is. She used some janky usb external one with her laptop because she hated the built-in one on that too.

We were out and I let her feel a gaming keyboard (I think it was Razer) and now she's all about the mechanical ones. She likes the satisfying click and the deep-set keys.

I'm having trouble finding a mechanical keyboard that'll work with iOS and doesn't make you hit an Fn key to get a question mark - which is a whole new problem I didn't expect.

I've considered getting just the camera adaptor but paying $70 for a dongle just makes my skin crawl.

I was looking for the OG Das Keyboard for the simple joy of seeing a blind lady typing on am all-black keyboard to a totally dimmed screen, but can't seem to find it (and don't think it's compatible anyhow).

Any ideas or suggestions would be awesome. Cheers!

October 14, 2017 - This BT mechanical keyboard also has that functionality to connect up to 3 different devices and switch on the fly, actually such a handy feature that I honestly thought I’d never use but noticed I’m using it more than I thought ... Nice setup. I'm waiting to see what Brydge will be offering as external keyboard for the new iPad, before considering upgrading my actual setup.

March 11, 2014 - I use mechanical keyboards on a regular basis, but I’m ok without them. I have generally used Bluetooth keyboards with the iPad. This including ones from Apple, MS, Logitech, and junky third parties. They work well, and I generally use a desktop for any serious coding or writing sessions.

I work on ipad and laptop(not mac) simeltaneously, I want a multi device bluetooth keyboard that can switch between them easily. As i came across many keyboards, I finalised two keyboards but can't filter out more because of lack of reviews for asus. Here are the keyboards :

  1. Logitech pebble Keys 2 K380s

  2. Asus marshmallow Kw100

What should I take between these two ?

I know the two main keyboards people recommend are

  1. Apple magic keyboard $399 plus tax (openbox: $299)

  2. Logitech combo touch $299.99 plus tax

I also noticed ESR has decent ratings, I just got their folio and the quality is nice. Does anyone have their keyboard folio in the picture I posted? That keyboard is only $149.99

Prices in CAD. (Imagine 35-40% off in USD)

I have the ESR case pictured. It is worth the $88 USD I paid for it. Pros: * Portrait mode - I use portrait mode a good bit when reading through documents or typing notes. This is the #1 reason I purchased this instead of the Magic Keyboard. * Has rubber bump stops so the keys won't touch your screen and leave marks. * Can put the iPad up a little instead of having it connect to the bottom (the image is showing this on the right where the iPad is elevated a bit above the case). This only works well if you are typing at a desk, as it'll become unstable if you want to touch it like this. * More stable than Magic Keyboard, due to having a battery built into the base. * Costs about 1/3 the price of the Magic Keyboard * Has a flap to hold your Apple Pencil securely * Has a built in case for when you pull your iPad off and hold it like a tablet. Cons: * Heavy compared to the Magic Keyboard, due to battery in the base. * Doesn't tip back as far as the magic keyboard, so your viewing angles are a bit more limited. * You have to remember to charge the keyboard part separately. * Connects over Bluetooth, so it takes a few seconds for your keyboard to wake up once it goes idle. * Doesn't feel as nice as the magic keyboard. * Has a non-haptic touchpad. * Touchpad is good, but the Magic Keyboard is better. * Keyboard and case will show oils from your hands and get shiny within the first week of ownership. * The built-in case isn't magnetically compatible with other ESR cases/ folios, so you can't buy one of the non-keyboard ones and easily transfer between the two when you don't want to take a heavy keyboard case with you. * Isn't compatible with any of the fancy stands that use the smart connector on the back of the iPad, since the case covers those pins up. * While the case is very thin, it is thick enough to get in the way of some USC-C/ Thunderbolt cables and prevent them from making a solid connection with the iPad. TLDR: Get the ESR if you want to save money, don't mind extra weight, can remember to charge it weekly, use portrait mode with a keyboard, and want a case that safely hold your Apple Pencil. | Get the Magic Keyboard if you want something lightweight, you don't having a case on your iPad when using as a tablet is for you, you won't remember to charge the keyboard, can't handle any Bluetooth lag or your use case requires easy access to the pins on the back of the iPad.

Im kinda interested in one too but Im not willing to pay crazy money for one that doesnt even use the smart conector. I might wait for 3rd party one (if it even comes out) or save for the Apple's official keyboard

I’m on the hunt for a keyboard to go with my iPad Pro M4, and I’m thinking about the Logitech Combo Touch Keyboard. I heard it’s supposed to be less prone to peeling, but I’m not sure if it’s the best choice for me. I’ve been using a Magic Keyboard for the past three years, and I’ve had a bit of a problem with the edges peeling off. I’m hoping that this issue has been fixed in the new Magic Keyboard.

In addition to the keyboard, I’m also wondering what size and storage capacity I should get for my iPad Pro. My current iPad Pro has 256 GB of storage, and I’ve used about 130-150 GB. I mostly use it for schoolwork and gaming, which uses up a decent amount of storage from my IPad

Oh, and I’m also thinking about getting the 11-inch or 13-inch iPad Pro. The 13-inch one seems a bit big and expensive, but my friends say it’s better for watching videos and drawing. What do you think?

Hello! I just bought and IPad Pro 11” 2022 and are not sure what keyboard to get, any recommendations? Is the trackpad necessary? I have a laptop to work on, ipad is to take to classes and study on the go and leisure stuff.

Are the keyboards protective? I had the pro 9,7” with a back case and the Smart Keyboard Folio and it was super protected! Is it the same with the 11” keyboard?

Thank you!
