July 19, 2016Optimal power setups for the Electrolytic Separator.
If I remember correctly, and 1 Mekanism Joule (the units of power) is equal to 10 RF (and they should be, unless I'm confusing them with Eu, although I think that was 2.5 or something), the Electrolytic separator uses 4k rf/t on DEFAULT configs - 400J/t (info taken from the mekanism wiki). Now, this shouldn't be too hard to achieve... some solid fuel generators will help, and you should definitely be storing energy up even if you're not ore processing - I made an automated and entirely self sufficient (within one chunk, aside from brine production) 4x ore system with Mekanism, using factories, which increase efficiency (I believe it uses the same gas or whatever to process a full factory at a time versus one machine at a time, so anywhere from 3-7x efficiency improvement). Also, no matter what, any unused hydrogen should be burned in the generator (if it's still around in the latest Mekanism... not 100% on that). Your goal shouldn't be to make more chemicals for processing, but process in the most efficient manner - Mek is GREAT for saving space once you figure out what machines need what. More on reddit.com

Nah that’s normal. Separators use high amounts of energy, especially when upgraded, to avoid an infinite energy exploit by feeding the Hyrdrogen from water to a Gas-Burning Generator. If you have no better use for the Hydrogen, it’s still a good use for it, but add a buffer tank between the separator and generator for refueling jet packs and flamethrowers. You’ll also, of course, need to supplement your energy supply with other generators. More on reddit.com

So in order to get more ore with Mekanism you need oxygen and you need an Electrolytic Separator for that. I used all 8 energy upgrades and it still chugs through power like there is no tomorrow. I then built a big reactor and I still have a power deficit. I was running on 5 Advanced solar arrays before the reactor. What would you all recommend me using to even out my Power usage/creation scale?

For some reason it seems like the Electrolytic Separators from Mekanism are infinitely draining energy even though what they're connected to doesn't further require any of the resource they're generating. The only time it doesn't is if I set both resources to "Idle" - but if I do this, I will run out of one or the other resource at some point, can I can't have that for the ore multiplying setup.
Anyone else run into this?
(My temporary solution has just been putting both Electrolytic Separators to react to redstone signal and using a switch to turn them off when I'm not using them :|)

Melanism uses a ton of power, but it can also generate a ton more. Take out some speed upgrades if you need to, but definitely start looking at a fission reactor as well. A pretty mundane one with a decent turbine will net you over 2.5m fe/t. And you're going to need the pellonium later down the line too. There's tons of helpful videos on setting up the reactor, and you're probably going to need to build an induction matrix if you haven't already to store all that power.

No hard numbers, but let me tell you from personal testing: fully upgraded water pump + electrolyzer (fully upgraded meaning 8 speed and 8 energy) can easily drive at least 3 gas burners at full capacity for a total of 24k RF/t. It can probably go higher, but since the ultimate energy cube can only output at 20k, I did not really bother. This setup can easily drive all your midgame needs for a long time and is a maintenance free, closed cycle. (in fact, I wonder which of my friends will stalk me enough to finally figure out the secret to my setup on our server here. Yes, gas-burners are ridiculous right now)
