IMO, Immersive Engineering tends to be severely underpowed, where as Mekanism tends to be extremely overpowered. Immersive Engineering has some neat ideas and mechanics, and is a very pretty mod, but it's quite expensive (needs lots of Steel that it makes slow to craft) for not super impressive machines. The Crusher is perhaps the most gated 2x ore processing mechanic I've ever come across in such a common mod. In most modpacks I see people either use IE for the sake of using IE, or just pick out the most useful bits and pieces; like Wires (which are fairly unique long-range power transfer) and the Garden Cloche (a good and fast single-block plant grower. The mod gets more use in Gated Progression modpacks where it's commonly found in the early game. Meanwhile Mekanism is more typical ideas and mechanics, and is a significant contributor to power creep. The first machine you make lets you make Steel in ~20 seconds IIRC, and the second is 2x ore processing which also makes the first machines much more efficient. A common build path beyond that is a 3rd machine for Crushing (and eventually 3x ore processing) and a 4th as an "Osmium Compressor" allowing the 5th to be the Digital Miner; the mod's quarry block. It gets up to 5x ore processing. It also has Energy and Speed upgrades which with a full set of both can (IIRC) turn a 20 RF/t 10 second process into a 200 RF/t 1 second process. The mod also has "Factories" which lets several machines run up to 7 or 9 (depending on version) operations in parallel. Answer from VT-14 on reddit.com

I've been trying to determine which tech mod(s) to include in my pack. what are the differences between these mods and which ones are better

Should I include all 4 or would there be too many overlaps.

Any help would be appreciated

I’ve always felt that immersive engineering was a little bit impractical, especially when it comes to power supplying and such. Personally my favorite mods from this list would be a combination of ender IO and thermal expansion, because this allows the widest range of tasks to be completed. However, there are some machines in mekanism that are completely unmatched by other tech mods, like the digital miner, which allows you to mine any ore you need in up to a 32 block radius, without you even having to have the ore as a sample. However, if you’re looking for a more “rustic” tech mod that still accomplished a lot of tasks, immersive might be fun for you.

Personlly I'd suggest EnderIO + 1. Which one is + 1? That depends on preference.

The reason I chose EnderIO is, because of the conduits aswell as the item filters. An addon called EnderIO Endergy also exists for it which is great. Considering the mod is also more focused on it's own alloys rather than the general Lead, Copper etc. that most tech mods have is why it imo works great even with another tech mod.

As a +1 I would choose Mekanism since most machines can work on 7 different items at a time while they have speed upgrades. You can also get up to 5x ore processing with it.

Iirc Thermal Series also provides ore processing above the normal 2x, but not sure. Haven't messed around with it too much.

Immersive Engineering is basically if you want to go with the "Immersive Gameplay" route. Haven't used it too much either.

I've mostly played IE but I'm intrigued by what mekanism has to offer and I like its 21st century theme, but I'm unsure if the two mods work together, or if there will be balance issues. Anyone have experience with these two mods at the same time?

They work together really well since they all use Forge energy. I use Mekanism and Flux for my power systems. Then I tend to mix and match between Immersive Engineering, Industrial Foregoing, and Mekanism blocks for various builds depending on my needs.

April 3, 2019 - To be honest, I would nominate Mekanism as the greatest Minecraft mod ever created. But that is just opinion. If you are considering 1.7.10 mods, Reika's mods has some extremely over powered ore duplication, something like 12x or higher, but those aren't mods you are going to pick up and play without earning a doctorate degree. Other honorable mentions are Immersive Engineering ...

Hi. So I am in early game of modded Minecraft and these two mods I have been wanting to do for a while. If you know how to get started please make sure to let me know if these mods are resource heavy and if so what kind of resource? What machines I will need and if they need RF or some other power source. And please let me know if I missed anything and thanks.

r/feedthebeast on Reddit: What's the point of Immersive Engineering or Mekansim?
February 4, 2021 -

I am not hating on either mod I am just wondering if there's a purpose behind the automation.

I haven't played either mod. I just wonder is there a purpose beyond simple automation? Yes, I can multiply ingot smelting by a factor of 5 (or at least I've heard that)..but...do these mods also provide something that is worth the 5x higher output?

Are there great things that will help me achieve something wonderful but require so much resources that it justifies this resource multiplication?

I have played Factorio in the past and sending a rocket into space requires a ton of resources which can take easily days of game time to collect. Is there something similiar with these two mods (I am aware of Manufactio, I just wonder about the base mods).

Thanks.
