Melissa and Doug are hit and miss. We have the wooden barn which has been used a ton but the wooden fruits we bought for the play kitchen had chipped paint in the first year with only moderate use. As others have said the quality can vary a lot, so if you’re buying second hand it might be better to see them IRL before purchasing. We are deep into the world of wooden toys here. Gluckskafer, Grapat loose parts, Hape, Plan Toys and Grimm’s are super high quality and would absolutely hold up in a hand-me-down or resale situation. More on reddit.com

I'm a little obsessed hahah 🤣 I get it on clearance at bargain stores like ollie's or second hand as long as it can be thoroughly wiped down.
Are they good quality ? I only learned of the lead into the 2000's bit recently looking through old threads on here.
We are on limited income as I'm a stay at home mom, but did so because we would be in the hole for childcare if I stayed with my job.
What other brands of toys do you seem to be overall safe and affordable? I try to buy Christmas/ birthday gifts ahead of time so I can save money and spread out the cost through the year instead of all at once.
Edit: thanks for all the responses I have lots of research to do, sorry if I didn't respond I read every comment, all very insightful! Trying to get to bed at a decent hour tonight.
I will certainly be more choosy with what I pick up in the future, but glad I learned something today and you all showed me the way hahah 🤣 ❤️🙌

I hate that they typically come in trays with no really good storage option for after it's been opened. :P That's the extent of my knowledge lol.
