Anyone ever ordered and build one of those Menard's buildings or garages?
Never done it, but former Menards employee. Menards’s definition of a “kit” is probably different than yours: it’s a literal shopping list, incl. 10% overages, etc. it’s a very complete list, but a shopping list all the same. if you need a 93” 2x4, you’re just getting an 8’ 2x4 off the shelf and told to cut it. It’s all stick build, and you’re expected to bring your own framing and finishing skills. Compare to the “TuffShed” kits from Home Depot where you are actually getting cut and sized stuff that you assemble like a model airplane. Those you just add paint and shingles. Think of the difference between a recipe and one of those hello fresh meals. Also, you’re paying retail. So unless you have those GC skills, you’re probably best hiring it out. At least the GCs usually can get some sort of materials discount. More on reddit.com

I've built several garages that Menards has supplied materials for. They're lumber and materials are as good as anyone else these days. It's mostly all name brand stuff, same as anyone else sells. I'm curious what your experience was. Did you build it yourself or hire someone to build it? What were your costs on top of what Menard's charges for their "kit"? Opinions on whether this is cost effective or not? I assume hiring someone to build it would double the costs or more.
Thanks. I recently acquired a lot and wanted an oversized detached garage and priced one of these out that fits my zoning and wanted some opinions from someone who had already done this. I don't know enough to do this "from scratch".

January 15, 2016 - I built a Menard's garage in '99, 28x28. When they slid it off the truck, one truss broke a couple boards, but they gave me more plus the nailers to repair it. I was plenty happy with it for the 9 years I had it. It may be different now, I don't know. ... As always, getting a good foundation and good concrete work is going to help long into the future. I would also recommend speaking to your old-school lumberyard, they also likely have packages that are competitive, but you can "option" it up since they probably sell all the materials.

Hello, I am looking to install a garage this fall and wanted to look at different options. One of the cheaper options is a garage kit from Menard's, there are others but Menard's is close to my neighborhood.
How much did yours cost?
How long did it take you to build?
Did you do your own footer/pad?

If you have the skillset and tools, building a garage is pretty easy whether if its "a kit" or not. Thats really the starting point.

Never used a kit, but have helped many times to build houses and garages. I'm assuming you mean detached and "frame up", not that you have a garage frame (attached or not) and just need to put up insulation, drywall, shelving, lights, doors, etc.. You must have a foundation and poured slab. This is not likely something your local code will allow you to do yourself. Even if it does, it's hard, cumbersome and will require a registered inspection you can legally frame on it. Framing is not difficult, but you must conform to local and state building codes. Then there is electrical, assuming you have enough spare overhead in your existing electrical panel. If detached, you'll have to have a trench dug (to code) for running electrical to the building. Again, must pass inspection. And actually #1, did you confirm you have landspace for this garage? You will need local approval too. Then there is the roofing... Then the finish work. I.e. Insulation, drywall, hangers or shelving, doors, door openers (yes some of the springs are VERY dangerous but the new designs are very safe and use a standard cord/less drill for changing tension). Having done all this work myself, if I were you (heck, even me now...) I would pay someone to do all of it. Just be active in all aspects. Go to your local builder association and ask for a typical punch list so you can check off the work and quality. FYI: if something doesn't seem right to you, it's not...

Thicker metal and more depth than the lesser option Oops you mean a garage . Was thinking storage cabinets ... That 11% stuff makes for a nice deal. ... I bought mine from Big L lumber. It came all complete and was easy to put up. When I bought mine you picked the package and then added to it.
