Question, do you list vintage clothes under normal clothes categories or under “speciality > Vintage Clothing” ?
Does it make a difference?
Looking at Terapeak I noticed certain things would have higher average sale price, however I was not able to find a trend, seems to be more random
Thanks in advance!
Normally, searching for clothes on eBay is fairly straightforward - type in what you're looking for, filter by size, and boom you're done. However, this sort of goes out the window if you're looking for vintage items. There's a couple reasons for this.
-
Wonky Categorization: Unlike normal clothes, which nearly always fall into 'Clothes, Shoes, and Accessories', vintage clothes tend to get spread all over the place. A good chunk of them end up in Clothes, Shoes, and Accessories -> Vintage, but if you're looking for military clothes (field jackets, peacoats, etc.), you need to also check Collectibles -> Militaria. And for some reason sellers often insist on putting them in bonkers categories like Collectibles -> Vintage, Retro, Mid-Century.
-
Ignoring sizing: For some reason, sellers in the vintage category seem completely averse to putting proper sizing information on their items. This means if you're doing what any sensible person does, and filtering your search results by size, you're immediately excluding all the listings that failed to include the size information properly.
-
Old-timey brands: With modern clothes, you probably have a pretty good idea of what the major brands are for the type of item you're looking for. However, with a few exceptions (Brooks Brothers, etc.), the brands of 50-60 years ago were completely different than the brands of today. This makes it very difficult to pare down your searches to a reasonable number of results.
Astute readers will recognize that this is the exact same problem that makes finding clothes on Etsy so darned difficult. And as with Etsy, the solution here is (mostly) the same: follow specific sellers that reliably list great stuff.
And fortunately, I happen to have a list of such sellers right here:
-
lopalopa.vintage - Lots of military jackets with low starting bids, also some nice 90's sneakers
-
victory-vintage_clothing - Tons of vintage suits and outerwear, located in UK
-
stella_coats - Leather jackets, waxed jackets, and trenchcoats - really amazing selection, located in UK
-
yourblackjacket - Leather jackets and outerwear
-
vintagedandy68 - Not a seller, but regularly adds very cool vintage watches up for auction to his collection
-
tropheus123 - Some really nice leather jackets and outerwear, if you can find it amidst his completely bonkers categorization
-
lessnerliquidations - Tons of vintage suits at really, really cheap prices
-
charadreus - Some nice bags, and ok shoes.
-
btbcashman - Extremely vintage (30's,40's) shoes.
-
kurokuni - A lot of neat items amidst tons of shitty tshirts and windbreakers
-
3000ideas - Lots of vintage militaria at low starting bids.
If you have anymore suggestions for how to find vintage clothes on ebay, let me know.
(Plug: If following all these sellers seems like a pain in the ass, my site Haberdashboard searches them automatically)
Thanks for this!
btw I think your link to lopalopa.vintage's page is broken
How easy is it to get duped on ebay when buying vintage clothing (i.e., paying a lot more than what something is worth, finding out it's not actually vintage, etc.)? Or is it all trial and error?
