I would suggest going with neither. More expensive suits use nicer fabrics, have canvassing vs fusing, and exhibit all around better craftsmanship. Also, you are typically getting a better cut (that is, the design) garment when you're paying more. Men's Wearhouse is sort of known for being low end, poor fitting suits. I personally don't think the Suit Supply cut looks good, and I think most Made To Measure options aren't worth it, since you are at the mercy of the fitter's eye, and even expensive ones can turn out very poorly, with them often times being too tight. In that price range, I would suggest Spier and Mackay . They have tasteful designs, use good mills, and the contemporary cut is a more classic fit. Answer from HarryMcFann on reddit.com

I started working for Men's wearhouse a year ago and as a top sales person for the region(who unfortunately makes no commission) im pretty sure I'm certified to say that the quality is garbage. Suits and outwear is garbage. The only quality thing you can buy is the Joseph abboud line(made in America by the union) I've seen the worst in clothing after 1 wash it's gone. Full polyester material and they call this quality... And they sell it for 450$. I would recommend going to Jos A Bank they have some hope.

r/mensfashionadvice on Reddit: Why do people recommend suit supply over Men’s Wearhouse? More specifically, for a tuxedo purchase
April 15, 2024 -

It seems every time I see a post asking for where to buy a tuxedo. The top answer is always suit supply. When I look online, tuxedo suit supply seem to start at $700 and get more expensive from there. I talked to Men’s Wearhouse today and it sounds like I can own one for $400.

What’s the difference between a tuxedo from suit supply and a tuxedo from Men’s Wearhouse? What am I trading off by saving the $300?

People also ask

Are suits sold as separates?
Yes. Some collections allow jackets and pants to be purchased separately, making it easier to get the right fit for your build.

I’ve been in 6 weddings 4 of which through MW 2 the black tux.

It took mens wearhouse 3 different appointments/weddings to finally get my suit measurements right and then I spend $300 to rent an ill fitting suit for 1 day.

Other options:

I will say the black tux was a much better experience with a better fit. Eg they don’t make me return the suit the day after the wedding and it works well if you have groomsmen out of state.

Using a local Taylor, could be more costly but worth a phone call to see what the options are.

Buying the suit:(this is more viable if it’s someone basic like black or navy blue) men’s wearhouse has cheap suits you can buy, you could pick out the color/pattern. It will probably be more than renting but atleast you own the suit now and if you buy from them they can make actual adjustments as opposed to rental suits, so now your groomsmen won’t look like a kid wearing their dads suit.

Or last but, certainly least popular we are telling the groomsmen to wear a navy blue suit, chances are they already own one or if they don’t they can either rent one or, buy a cheap one from MW. However in our case pretty much all our groomsmen own one already.

r/malefashionadvice on Reddit: 500 dollars to spend at Men's Warehouse, what should I look for?
December 13, 2017 -

Hi!

I was awarded a 500 dollar "professional attire" grant from my university. We have to shop at Mens Warehouse, Macy's, or a local suit store to spend this stipend. I tried going the local route, and was offered one of two options by the store: Two Ferrecci suits and a Ferrecci dress shirt for 500, or a single London Fog suit (with nothing else) for 500. I chose the former. They charged the university, only for me to show up and them to say "Oh, Ferrecci didn't have anything in your size, so you're getting the London Fog." Given that they didn't contact me at all about this change (and STILL charged the university) I'm pretty much done with them.

So now I consider my only realistic option to be Men's Warehouse. I know I'm not getting the world's best suit within my budget, but I'm hoping to get a buy one, get one deal. My local MW about 100 suits in the 250-400 dollar range (I'd also love to take advantage of their 3 dress shirts for 99 deal) that are on the BOGO deal. What should I look for in terms of brand, what to avoid, etc.? (And yes, I know tailoring is key)

Thank you!

Edit: I'm gonna stress again that I'm really not looking at Macy's. The one near me has very little in my size and doesn't always seem to run the great promotions.

Alrighty - let's see what we can do.

Qualifications: I worked at Men's Wearhouse (hourly, then sales, then management) for six years, and still keep a collegial relationship with my old coworkers, though I've moved on to the higher-end stuff. I do not work for them, and have no financial interests in the company (which is good, considering the way their stock has been...)

The good news - they'll have lots of styles in your size. I'm working under the assumption that you have a non-slim build; let me know if that's not the case. The first question I need to ask is: what's the condition of your wardrobe relative to your needs (i.e., how often do you need to wear a suit for work, and how many do you currently own)? Advice will vary based on whether you' really need as many decent suits as possible, vs 1-2 pretty good ones.

The best suits available at MW are Joseph Abboud (not JOE, just plain old Joseph Abboud). They are remarkably well-made for the price - all Italian fabrics from good mills, half-canvassed, and made by union labor in Massachusetts. They stack up well against something from SuitSupply or a lower end Brooks Brothers rig. There are two main fits - you should check the Modern (which is actually aggressively normal in its cut, not significantly slim at all) and see what size you are.
Assuming you're looking to stay as close to $500 as possible, you can't get one at full price, and they're not available as BOGOFree (just BOGOHalfPrice). However - there are always a ton of them on clearance. I've included a link to the best one I found online from a cursory search - https://www.menswearhouse.com/p/joseph-abboud-blue-check-modern-fit-suit-38WM38WN92 . In an ideal world, if you aren't in a rush, you should wait and see if they run an X% off clearance sale, which would apply. If you find a clearance style in a local store that's not in your size, they likely can get it from another store.

If, on the other hand, you need as many suits as possible, then there are a couple of brands worth checking - Calvin Klein (the regular "Slim" fit is not actually slim cut, and works well for bigger guys; avoid the "Extreme Slim" line), Ralph Lauren (small selection), and Pronto Uomo Platinum Suit Separates (another MW house brand, but reasonably decent and all-wool). You're still not going to use BOGO Free - the suits listed are all eligible, but it's not the best deal. Typically, MW rotates through a menu of "Designer Suit Sales", in which brands A, B, and C are $250, or $279, or $300, or whatever, and everything else is BOGO. (Today, it's Perry Ellis, JOE, and Ben Sherman - skip'em.) Usually, you can find one of those three on sale for between $200-$330 dollars with patience, which is significantly better than $700 for two. If you time it right, get yourself two suits off that, and pony up $100 for three dress shirts if you need 'em.

Just a note of caution about MW, their people work on commission and they can be a little pushy trying to get you to buy more than you came in for. Also, their tailoring service are notoriously bad! Also, their styles seem to be a little older and when they try to look trendy, it looks like they’re trying too hard.

I’d go with the Macy’s option. If you happen to catch a good sale, you might find a Calvin Klein or dkny suit. Probably have enough in your budget for a couple.

August 30, 2019 -

I became employed at a Men's Wearhouse recently and I have been surprised by the lack of quality, yet astonishingly high prices that Men's Wearhouse charges. Almost everything is Made in China. They take advantage of, and make extreme profits off of cheap labor. I started working there so that I could get the employee discount of 55% off. I bought a tie in my first week (originally $70, reduced to $32) and wore it that day. When I got home, I took it off and noticed that the loop of fabric that holds the thinner end of the tie to the back had become unwoven, mind you, it was not the "Joseph Abboud" tag that came undone, it was the piece of fabric that had the design of the whole tie.

The Tux and Suit rentals are even worse. They have no problem charging an 18 year old high-school student $200 for renting a tux for one night. It is immoral to charge young men with little to no money such extreme prices.

Just a few days ago, the district manager was talking to my manager about how extreme the prices are, and was saying that no one should be paying $700 for a suit made in China, and they should only be paying that for a Made in U.S. suit. The quality is garbage, the prices are extreme, and the employees know it but still sell the scam for commission.

I wasn't thinking properly and now it's too late for me.

I'm going on a cruise and there is a formal night and I wanted to wear a blazer.

I went to mens warehouse and just got a typical navy blue blazer and they measured the sleeves and they are now being tailored.

I am feeling very uneasy about it because I don't know if my blazer is a good blazer or if I have a garbage blazer. I've never shopped for blazers but I don't know what I have is considered a good blazer or just cheap garbage. I typically wear quality clothing with exceptional material. No Target-business-casual or anything like that. Just never owned a blazer.

I spent like 200 on the blazer and then 35 for them to tailor the sleeves.

I'm not too concerned about the price, but I am concerned that 200 for a blazer won't get you a high quality blazer.

Is men's wearhouse a good place to get good blazers? Or are they just the walmart of blazers?

July 21, 2024 -

I rented a tuxedo from men’s Wearhouse recently for my wedding going on next week. When I went to get fitted some time ago the employee helping me out was not very understanding of my bigger size. He had a hard time finding a jacket and shirt that fit my size etc. anyway I pick up the suit this past Saturday and when I got there an employee gave me my suit to try on and said he would be near by to help me out. Tried on the suit and the pants were tight on my waist and the shirt was tight on me as well. Now I understand that this type of clothing should be fitting but man this was like I couldn’t breath. So I stepped out to find nobody around to help and one employee was helping another family in the store. So after about 15-20ish minutes of looking for this guy that gave me my suit I decided to change and just say this it. After I was already dressed and ready to go the employee comes up to me says how did everything go. I told him my issues and says it depends on the person trying the clothes and some like it fitting and others don’t. But for what I was asking would be an extra fee due to special alterations. I decided to just leave with my tuxedo and head home. I show my fiancé the outfit and says it’s too small and why didn’t I say anything. Told her my experience when I went to go pick up my clothes whatever. I ended up having to buy a pants, a shirt and vest that was accommodating to my size. I tell my fiancés grandma my story and says I should return the tuxedo and ask for my money back. I say well maybe it’s not worth it because I’m still going to use their shoes and jacket but everything else I had to buy on my own. My fiancé suggested I just return it on the due date and contact corporate about this situation. Has anybody had any luck with this type of situation? Wondering if corporate would be of any help and give me full or at least partial refund. Sorry for the long story. Any help would be appreciated

r/mensfashion on Reddit: The Men’s Wearhouse: Do you shop here?
December 22, 2022 -

I’ve been an associate with the Men’s Wearhouse on and off since 2015. I’ve seen the company go from public to private, gain designers and drop designers, and in my haberdashery journey, I’ve noticed that many items sold at TMW are also shared in other competitors, such as Macys or Nordstrom Rack.

I wonder what drives people to this store. Excluding rentals, I’ve assisted suit buyers who “aren’t suit people” who were reluctant to spend $500 for a Calvin or Kenneth Cole but didn’t know about Indochino or Suit Supply.

I believe it’s the service and convenience that brings people back, but that comes at a cost. I sold someone a $500 suit knowing they could have gotten one for $200, and I don’t make commission.

Due to the privatization of the business, it sucks to work there. No competitive wage, demanding, self absorbed customers (and their wives), and the company just put a hold on pre-sale clearance items because they want to save shipping costs. So in terms of workers, there’s nothing but teens and managers who work there. Aside from a 40% discount and a credit system called PMDA, I’m determining it’s worth.

Why do you shop here, or don’t?

Honestly, they have great marketing. Before I was experienced with men's fashion, the first thing that came to my mind when I had to buy my first suit was "You're gonna like the way you look..." I walked in and was waited on almost immediately. The salesperson made it super simple: Here's a few cuts to look at: this one is more classic, this one is more trendy/modern, I like the way this fits your shoulders etc. etc. Chose one, then he chalked and pinned it up for tailoring: "Come back in 10 days." Along the way I got a tie and shirt to match and "don't forget socks." As a kid, it couldn't have been easier. Contrast that with a more typical "big box" store where there are infinitely more brands, cuts, styles etc. and the salespersonell may or (may not) have a clue about suits, and some places may not involve tailoring. Especially after the pandemic decreased in-office interaction and the more general trend of casual dress among American men, I'd guess the vast majority are looking for "easy" and Mens' wearhouse provides it.

Both TMW and JaB are fine for one-off events (groomsman suit for a wedding, e.g.), but anyone with a moderate budget buying a suit for consistent wear should skip both and head to SuitSupply at the cheap end, Brooks Brothers in the middle, or bespoke or designer at the high end. It’s worth the investment—cheap suits look, feel, and wear cheaply. Calvin Klein is a great example of fast fashion masquerading as designer, and that’s the broad selection of both stores imo. Edit: the salespeople at TMW have always been helpful and deserve their due credit.

I was just wondering what you guys think about Men's Wearhouse. I get a lot of clothes there because their deals are ridiculous and posted so often. I rarely spend more than $20 and I'll walk away with multiple shirts/pants in a single visit.

I hear bad things about them like they're going out of business and stuff like that but I've never been able to figure out why.

People talk trash about them because of several things. Probably the most important thing to this sub: they train their employees to sell people clothing that is too large for them. If you're a 40R for a suit jacket and 34-30 pants, they'd likely try to sell you a 42R or 44R jacket and a 36-32 pants. They don't have a good quality to price ratio, even on sale. They have many brands that are horribly overpriced for their quality. A good example is Calvin Klein... it's poor quality wool and fused construction for the price of a good suit from Suit Supply or Brooks Brothers. If I was given a $600 gift card for a suit from Men's Wearhouse, the only brand I'd look at is the made in the USA Joseph Abbouds. I, and I think a lot of people on MFA and FMF, don't like when stores have a pricing model of having massive sales all the time. No business should be able to stay afloat by having 40%-70% off sales nearly every day of the year. So it means that Kohls', JC Penney's, MW's, and Jos. A. Bank's products aren't worth anywhere close to their retail tag, which feels pretty damn dishonest. Those $20 hauls you have were never worth the $100 they were listed to have been. Edit: All that said, if you like the stuff you get there and are satisfied with the quality for what you pay, keep buying from them. To channel their former owner, if you like the way you look, stick with them. Don't let a few random guys on the internet sway your opinion on your seemingly favorite menswear retailer.

I recently went to Men's Wearhouse because I had a $200 gift card to spend. I went there with the express goal of getting a navy suit. My experience: My sales rep was pretty aloof and didn't seem to care too much. He kept pulling out standard fit jackets when I told him I would definitely need slim fit. He stuck me in a few different brands (Hilfiger, Calvin Klein) that were <$500 and they all honestly felt like crap and didn't seem to fit well at all. The only suit I liked was the Joseph Abboud suit ($700) -- the jacket fit pretty well and felt so much better. I say, okay, I guess we'll try to work with this. When it comes to tailoring, the tailor and sales rep were very much stuck five or ten years in the past. I kept getting raised eyebrows and "Really? You sure...?" when I asked to get the jacket taken in more and the pants slimmed down a lot. I'm 5'10" 155lb and the Joseph Abboud Slim-fit navy suit still needed a lot. So that was a long and really annoying process and it didn't feel like they were on board with what I wanted at all. Sales guy tries to upsell the shit out of me with shirts, ties, etc. even though I explicitly told him just the suit. He then mentions the buy-one-get-one deal on suits. I could use a charcoal suit too, so he puts me in a "$700" Calvin Klein suit that feels horrible. At the end of the day I decided to not have the in-house tailor alter my suits (which would've prevented me from returning them for a refund) so I could think about it more. Since then, I brought back both suits for a full refund (got a nasty glare from the sales guy) and inadvertently got a $200 check instead of a gift card back. Just my two cents, sample size of one. In the end, it did not feel like I was getting $700 worth of suits. I'm going with J.Crew or Suitsupply now.
