We pre booked the Doom dead and buried tour before our trip to Edinburgh. Instructions and times for the tour were very simple to follow and we found our evening appointment very easily situated at the Mercat cross monument. We were handed our earphones and we were glad to book a tour that had this option as the centre of Edinburgh can be quite bustling and hard to hear a guide without.

Mercat tours do a vault tour that is more history based than a ghost tour.
The issue with that is that they only really have access to the vaults under their gift shop, which is only around 4 vaults.
You'd see just as many, if not more, by going for drinks in Bannermans and The Banshee Labyrinth.
Since most of these tours, like Mary Kings Close etc..., are businesses, they don't let other tour guides into their premises, so there isn't one single tour that goes round all of the vaults.
No matter which tour you pick, you're only likely to see a handful of the actual vaults, and you will be disappointed if you expected to see the whole underground city.

Mercat!!! Fantastic tours. Slightly bias as I used to work for them as a guide haha. But really really good... The vaults tours are genuinely scary with no gimmicks or people jumping out at you. I used to go down there 4-8 times a week and there were some nights that I just wanted to run out crying. If your after ghosts then you'd be hard pushed to beat a trip to the vaults. Have fun!!! January 14, 2015Best Ghost/Scary tour in Edinburgh?
Well Mercat Tours is the first and the only 5 star tour company in Edinburgh, and they have exclusive access to the most extensive set of vaults of the South Bridge. The Ghost and Ghouls tour is only £14 per adult and is 2 hours of gory and real history and includes drinks in their underground Cellar. The Hidden and Haunted tour is the adult only 1hr tour which is £11 and includes paranormal happenings in the vaults. The newest tour they have is the Doomed, Dead and Buried tour, it goes to the underground and the Canongate Graveyard. Here is their official website. My source is my girlfriend Victoria who works for Mercat so again, slightly biased! I personally have been on a bunch of the tours and had a brilliant time and the guides are fantastic. Hi I am looking for a guided tour of the old underground city of Edinburgh. People have mentioned Mary Kings close, Edinburgh Vaults etc. But I'd rather have a historical and informative tour over a "ghost tour" and its difficult to find out which ones are which.
Can anyone recommend the best tour for me?

Mercat tours do a vault tour that is more history based than a ghost tour.

Mary Kings close is pretty informative. It's not a "ghost" tour really. Takes you underground and either the tour guide or a recorded informative bit will be played on some of the Tv's as you go round.

Friends and I are going to be in Edinburgh in a few weeks. We're trying to decide between the Mercat and the City of the Dead tour.
Which one would you recommend?
We all like history but I'm the only one really into the ghost stuff.
