So what if we keep rolling along We never seem to get anywhere You are here and I am there And none of us could give a care We are headed for the same destination Every person in every nation Merrily we roll along Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Merrily we roll along Woo-hoo, woo-hoo Who cares if we get what we want Who cares about each passing trend A big old house and a big old car It doesn't matter in the end If you think there's a final reward Be like the rest and climb on aboard What's the sense in your fretting Might as well have yourself a good time Get what you can while you can Before all them final bells do chime Are you feeling a just little bit cheated Well what the hell did you expect Did you think that you would live forever If you did you were incorrect Life is long but time is short Better get it on before you mort

r/Sondheim on Reddit: The meaning of “Merrily We Roll Along”
June 9, 2024 -

I realise I am likely being dumb and missing something obvious, but is the title “Merrily We Roll Along” referencing anything? If it’s an original title it feels strangely convoluted and unnatural? I know the musical is based on the play of the same name, so I guess my question is technically about the original play

This requires a deep dive into American theater and show music (and cartoons!) In the mid-19th century there was a minstrel song called "Goodnight, Ladies". (Yes, the same song that Meredith Wilson incorporated into The Music Man.) You are probably familiar with the verse, but the chorus was sung to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb": Merrily we roll along roll along roll along Merrily we roll along over the deep blue sea This was sometimes used as a children's nursery rhyme or lullaby - but it became a very popular folk song. In the 1930s the phrase was borrowed - twice. First in the 1934 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart - the one that the musical was based on. The critics loved the play, but audiences weren't enthusiastic. The next year the phrase was the title of a song by Eddie Cantor and Charlie Tobias sung in a Merrie Melodies cartoon. Merrily we roll along, my honey and me Verily there's no one half as happy as we It was popular in the 1930s, but not well remembered now. Except, the tune became the Looney Tunes theme song (played when Porky Pig says "That's all folks!"). The song has no relation to the Kaufman and Hart play. Stephen Sondheim admired the play, and proposed it to Hal Prince as a possible musical - and the rest is history. In the musical the song with that title is used to mark the passage of time, and also how reckless choices can put you on paths you don't even realize you have taken.

The phrase "merrily we roll along" suggests a carefree, optimistic journey through life. However, if you listen to the title song and its variants it becomes more of a warning about not letting life slip past you. The title's cheerful connotation contrasts sharply with the characters' actual experiences of missed opportunities, broken friendships, and the compromises they make along the way. Especially in the original production with its graduation framing device, the title highlights the disparity between the idealistic aspirations of youth and the often harsh realities of adult life. The journey "merrily" rolling along turns out to be far more complex and fraught with challenges than the title's simplicity suggests.
