Stainless steel bowls are pretty thin, I think you'd end up melting through the bowl pretty darn fast. They are also coated with stuff that is probably going to burn and get into your marshmallows. You'd probably be much better off going to a thrift store and getting yourself a cast iron pot or some other metal baking dish (cast iron being the best) than trying to use a bowl. Line it with mortar. Tip it over, put plastic wrap over the holes, just covering the holes (this is a release agent for later). Get good quality duct tape and really tape up the bottom right making sure you have all of the holes well covered. Get a bag of mortar, mix it slightly stiff ( so it can hold itself up), then with a trowel line the entire inside of the pit about 1”. Make sure this is where you want it, it will be heavy when your done. Let the mortar set up, I’d say a day or two, then peel off the tape. Then Light it up! More on reddit.com

You can't scorch sand. Silica melts to form glass if you get it hot enough, but you can't do that in a backyard fire pit. People might be bringing dirt or pollen that ends up in the sand from it sitting outside. Is it a fireplace for wood or propane? If it is wood it will just end full of ash and cinders so it doesn't matter what you use and I wouldn't put anything in it. If you are using propane, use whatever you think looks good and that you can get a layer of in the fire pit without blocking anything. Lava rock is common as it will let Amy rain or dew evaporate quicker when it is not in use than if you used sand which would help with rust concerns. You could scorch/burn/melt things below your fire pit if you use it on the grass or deck. Throw a few pavers underneath it, doesn't need to be anything special as it won't get super hot.
