I've moved out of Michigan, what do I do with my Michigan plate and renewal notice?
If you have titled and registered your vehicle in another state, Michigan does not require the return of the Michigan license plate. The plate should be destroyed before disposal to prevent misuse. If you receive a Michigan registration renewal notice after you have registered your vehicle in another state, it can be ignored.

How can I renew my registration while I am out of state?
Online
- Go to Online Services and then to Vehicle Services. Go to ‘More Online Vehicle Services’, you can renew your plate and submit a one-time mailing address so your new tab and registration get mailed to you.
- Tabs and registrations renewed using the Quick Renewal option will be mailed to the residential address on record.
By mail
- Use the Renewal Fee Calculator to determine the renewal fee.
- Send a photocopy of your current registration, proof of valid Michigan no-fault insurance, and a check or money order payable to the "State of Michigan" to:

How soon should I put my new license plate and tab on my vehicle?
- Put the new plate with the tab on your vehicle immediately.
- The old plate is cancelled when your new plate is issued.
- Driving on your old plate can result in a ticket from law enforcement and vehicle impoundment.
- Always have the proper registration and insurance certificates with you when driving.

Does anybody know how i go about getting my registration renewed for Michigan while stationed out of state with out of state insurance?
The Michigan DMV website ( Department of state actually ) would a good source of information. In many cases they have military specific information and stipulations and often times a self-service website that just works. You don't have out of state insurance, you have insurance on the vehicle in the place that it's principally garaged (out of state). That's 100% the right way. More on reddit.com

The Michigan Secretary of State charges only a $10 late fee for registration renewal, so no big deal there. Yet there are a couple important notes to make here: The Michigan Secretary of State automatically informs a car insurer when the car's registration expires, and requires the car insurer to cancel the car's insurance. So most likely, your insurance is now invalid. So you likely will need to talk to your insurer once you renew your registration in order to get renewed insurance. Driving your motor vehicle without registration in Michigan is a misdemeanor. Driving your motor vehicle without insurance in Michigan is also a misdemeanor. And having improper plates on your motor vehicle in Michigan is a separate misdemeanor (and yours has improper plates now because your tab is out of date). So if you're driving your car right now, you're committing three different misdemeanors. Get new registration, ASAP. I'm a criminal defense attorney in Michigan, specializing in traffic/licensing. You do not want to pickup points, hundreds of dollars and fines, and a criminal record due to an oversight. More on reddit.com
