r/Staples on Reddit: Staples assistant manager to microcenter assistant manager, good move or no?
April 19, 2023 -
As title states, I am a current assistant manager who works 10-11 hour days and just wants my life back and to be able to make enough to live somewhere nice with my girlfriend. Should I keep on the staples grind in hopes of making GMD and getting a GM position, or should I jump ship to a store that sells things I'm truly enthusiastic about and try to make it from there?
Serious answers only please, no "run" comments. I'm not afraid of hard work, I'd just like for my hard work to be actually recognized and pay off.

Former AM here - Without knowing what you make I would consider jumping ship. The primary reason being you can renegotiate your salary at a new employer and make more in the process. You also mention that micro center interests you. Staples has some tech but also has “random” desks/chairs and of course helping the older customer find a Rolodex. Worst case you go to micro don’t like it and come back to Staples -if you are a hard worker they will probably want you back and are generally always hiring. In this day and age loyalty is very rarely rewarded. At the VERY least interview for the experience and to see if you get the job offer + what pay you are offered. I enjoyed working at Staples but I do not see the company trending in the right direction. In addition to the GM being salary (always on the clock and expected to answer to DM even if off) I actually don’t think Staples is in danger of closing I just don’t care for all the little things they were pushing hard (such as the app, and happy returns - I can say from a non staples corporate lens the app data is a huge plus for Staples but I think they implemented it to quick and made it harder then needed for the older customers. Happy returns actually was a net loss for the company mostly because it was pulling from print) I personally jumped into corporate. The question does not have to be an either or question and unless you prefer working in a store I feel that you would have a much better work life balance with a 9-5 style office job. They are certainly out there and while you don’t have office experience (I am assuming here) you have “field” experience which is valued. Some general rules I follow: always be at least casually looking at other jobs (interviews are free and good practice always say “no” to “may we contact employer”) you never know what is out there without looking and interviews are two ways. You can 100% always say no - after all you have a job give a 2 week notice. I will die on this hill but trust me giving a heads up notice is important to not burning bridges. This is even if you dislike the employer. Retail is a “small world” it’s quite possible your current GM or DM also jump to micro center at some point and while people can or do forgive the do not often forget… keep resume updated. You may or may not realize but as a AM you have so much exposure to what employers are looking for and can always stretch it. Some examples: leadership, I know staples has some weird hierarchy where the AM is technically only in charge of the tech area - nothing wrong with pulling the you own the sales floor card and talking about the training you did with the cashiers or just saying you lead the 10-20 employees in the building. I am not telling you to lie but look at the job description for your role now and pull from it. As always I am happy to answer general questions here or through my DM. Wish you the best and I hope this helps you out! (On mobile so my formatting might be a bit crazy)

From personal experience, I’d say jump ship. I did the AM grind and eventually got myself promoted to GM. It’s more money, but also more hours. It’s a salaried position, so you will be expected to always be working. But you’re only salaried for 40 hours, so those 10-11 hour days you’re working now will not come with overtime. Basically, take everything you dislike about the AM position and multiply it. You might be able to get away with only being in for four hours like some GMs do…but you’d have to luck into a store that can run without you so that there’s no scrutiny on you.
