There is no free version of Office 2016. If you purchased it in the past, you can (re-)install from your associated account.
An alternative to Microsoft Office would be to try the open source office suite called LibreOffice. It includes a word processor, a spreadsheet program and a presentation program, and it can create files that are compatible with the Microsoft Office counterparts.

Hello MickeyBob,
I'm Ibhadighi and I'd happily help you with your question. In this forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself.
To install the standalone version of Office 2016 using your perpetual license, without getting the Office 365 version, follow these steps:
- Uninstall Office 365: First, uninstall any Office 365 or other Office versions you have on your computer to avoid conflicts.
- Visit Microsoft Software Page: Go to the Microsoft software page dedicated to installing older versions of Office: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/office](https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/office%29)
- Enter Your Product Key: Enter your Office 2016 product key. This will validate your license and direct you to the correct version of Office 2016.
- Download Office 2016: Once your key is verified, you'll be given the option to download Office 2016. Download the installation file.
- Install Office 2016: Run the installation file and follow the on-screen instructions to install Office 2016 on your computer.
- Activate Office 2016: After installation, open Excel 2016 and activate it using your perpetual license key.
By following these steps, you should be able to install the standalone version of Excel 2016 without it defaulting to an Office 365 version. Remember, since Office 2016 is an older version, it's essential to ensure your operating system is compatible with it.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Ibhadighi for responding.
My original attempt to install Office 2016 was on a "clean" VM with nothing but a base Windows installation. I have uninstalled Office 365 since my first attempt.
I'm still very confused. When I use the link you provided, all instructions seem to lead to the Office 365 setup site (i.e., the same site I used in my first attempt). Is this as it should be?
Your instructions seem to suggest I should see a place to enter my product key before proceeding further. I see no where to enter the product key.
When I went to the Office 365 site, there are no options to install Office 2016 specifically.
I have already redeemed my product code using an account for which I already had an Office 365 subscription. When I view my account info, my Office 2016 product key is not shown, only my Office 365 subscription is shown. Is this as it should be?
Thanks again for your assistance.
I want to install Office 2016 on a laptopt that i use, i have a purchased licence but i can't find the download file for the suite.
Every official Microsoft webpage tells me to log in into my account but i don't have any and don't need a Microsoft account in that particular machine, i just want to enter my licence key and thats it.
I have other computer that i activated that way, but can't find the installation file anywhere.
Is there any possibility to install without login anywhere?
