Great question! I’d be happy to clarify the differences between Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Microsoft 365 Apps for Business, as well as their multi-device usage policies.
Multi-Device Usage:
Yes, both plans allow you to install Microsoft apps on up to 5 devices per user, including PCs, Macs, tablets, and mobile phones.
You can sign in on multiple devices simultaneously, but active usage policies may apply (e.g., concurrent editing in OneDrive).
Key Differences:
| Feature | Microsoft 365 Business Standard | Microsoft 365 Apps for Business |
|---|---|---|
| Core Office Apps | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access (PC only), Publisher (PC only) | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access (PC only), Publisher (PC only) |
| Email Hosting (Outlook + Exchange) | Yes (50GB mailbox) | No |
| Business Tools (Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.) | Yes | No |
| Web & Mobile Versions | Yes | Yes |
| Desktop Versions | Yes | Yes |
| Advanced Security & Business Features | Yes | No |
| Target Audience | Businesses needing email & collaboration tools | Businesses needing Office apps only |
Which One Should You Choose?
- If you need professional email (Outlook + Exchange) and collaboration tools like Teams & SharePoint, go with Microsoft 365 Business Standard.
- If you only need Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) without email hosting, then Microsoft 365 Apps for Business is a more cost-effective choice.

Hi, Desmond
Thanks for posting in our community.
According to your description, first of all, please be kindly to understand that Microsoft has changed the terminology as below:
Microsoft 365 Business Standard (formerly Office 365 Business Premium)
Microsoft 365 Apps for business (formerly Office 365 Business)
Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise (formerly Office 365 ProPlus)
Back to your key concern, the major distinction is that the Microsoft Business Essential, Standard and Premium are for companies that are under 300 users. The E-Class or Enterprise licenses are for organizations with enterprise class needs and more than 300 users.
Also the differences between M365 Business Premium ( formerly O365 business) and M365 for Enterprise has different security level and mail storage.
Security: Security features were added to the relatively new Business License called Microsoft Business Premium which muddies this distinction slightly but look to Office 365 Enterprise licenses and Microsoft 365 for services like phishing prevention, Mobile Device Management, Risk Based Conditional Access, Insider Risk Management and a number of advanced security and compliance features.
More Mail Storage: The Business Level mail services have an upper limit of 50 gigabytes of mail. The Microsoft 365 and Office 365 have 100 gigabytes.
For more detailed information, please take a look for this the comparance of this two - Compare Office 365 to Microsoft 365.
Ref: Service availability within each Microsoft 365 and Office 365 plan.
Hope it helps for you.
Kind Regards,
Zed

Microsoft 365 Family is designed for personal use and includes premium Office apps, 1 TB of OneDrive cloud storage, and advanced security features. It can be used by up to 6 users on multiple devices.
On the other hand, Microsoft 365 Business Standard is designed for small to medium-sized businesses and includes premium Office apps, email and calendar hosting with Exchange Online, online meetings and video conferencing with Teams, and advanced security features. It can be used by up to 300 users.
It is not recommended to use Microsoft 365 Family in a SMB firm as it is not licensed for business use. It is important to use the appropriate licensing for your business needs to ensure compliance with Microsoft's terms and conditions.
