Hi Daryl,
Welcome to the Microsoft Community. Thanks for supporting Microsoft products.
The main services of Microsoft 365 Basic are 100 GB OneDrive cloud storage and ad-free secure Outlook web and mobile email and calendar, but note that it does not include Office apps for Windows or Mac. You can use Microsoft 365 apps (Word ,Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) on the Web, iOS and Android, but you can't download their desktop version.
If you just need some basic Word and Excel editing, then Microsoft 365 Basic will do the job.
However, if you need a full-featured Office suite with Office applications on Windows or Mac, consider subscribing to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family.
Also note that the free version of the subscription also supports Microsoft 365 apps for Web, iOS and Android, and offers 5GB of OneDrive cloud storage.
For the difference between these subscriptions please see: Cloud Storage Pricing and Plans
I hope this is useful and if you have any questions please let me know.
Have a good day!
Best regards,
Ian - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

You can use the online (browser) version of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Microsoft 365 Basic does not include the desktop version of these apps.

You're own website says otherwise,
"Frequently asked questions about Microsoft 365 Basic
Microsoft 365 Basic is a subscription for one person. It provides access to 100 GB of cloud storage that can be used across Outlook and OneDrive, and access to popular Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel and PowerPoint."
Please note the last sentence.
