Surface Book was the best
The concept had a lot of potential but they never explored it in full. For example, it had modularity way before Framework - but they never even sold the GPU base seperately. That would have been a great thing if you originally just bought a version without Nvidia. Or wanted to upgrade from the previous generation. Or because your battery had aged too much. For what they actually did, the hinge/lock as well as the seperation of components between tablet and base was probably too expensive => I doubt we‘ll ever see it again More on reddit.com

Agreed 100%. I know of its shortcomings. I owned every single generation. Still own a Book 2: CPU throttling because of low heat dissipation Issues with keyboard base connector when separating/attaching Battery bulging screen Gap when closing like a laptop But it was so unique. It had so many redeeming qualities: INCREDIBLE battery life! It had 80-100Wh batteries, I get a legitimate 8-10 hours of runtime. Amazing GPU performance, since the GPU was stored in a completely separate chassis from the CPU, the cooling in the base was actually more than adequate. GPU never thermal throttled or reduced performance for me. Tablet mode. The clipboard section was actually lighter than a Surface Pro because the battery was smaller. Tent mode, allowed full battery runtime, but could support itself like a kickstand so it needed less desktop space. Pen inking with the magnetic storage on the side. Headphone jack. The engineering on that hinge was GENIUS. When closed, the hinge rolled up to create a smaller profile. When opened, since the clipboard section was too heavy it would topple backwards, but the hinge actually extended the length of the base, creating a longer platform that prevented it from tipping. It's one of those function meets form things! The hinge gap. Hugely controversial but when you think about it, it was brilliant. The gap allowed the keys to be on the same plane as the keyboard deck. For example, on Surface Laptop (and MacBooks) the keys have to be sunk into the frame, so that they do not contact the screen when closed. The Surface Book did not need this because the gap related the space for the keys leaving more interior volume for battery and GPU allowing a thinner profile. WOW factor. Nothing like ripping the clipboard off in a meeting and hearing a gasp beside you from someone who hadn't seen it in action. "Did you just break your laptop??!"
