Defender For Servers/ Defender for Endpoint
User licenses only let you onboard user devices (5 per user), not servers. The usual way these days to get servers onboarded and licensed is to onboard them with Defender for Servers from the Azure portal. There is multiple ways to onboard your Windows Server 2019 machines to Windows Defender ATP, using a local script, GPO, MEMCM (SCCM) etc, for more details:

Hi all, quick question.
With Defender for Endpoint we can onboard servers into the Defender portal using the onboarding package. Does anyone know how the licenses work for this? I've had a scope around the Microsoft documentation but can't see anything outright.
I'm guessing that if we have Defender for Endpoint capabilities then we can onboard as many servers we like. However I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to operate a ratio module, 1:10 for example

I asked this question to Microsoft, and their response was that if you have a user with a defender license, then it would be included as part of that. So, 1000 users can cover 5000 different devices. This is not to be confused with Defender for Cloud as this is another subscription/license. The additional costs that come as part of this is if you put the logs into something like sentinel and store the logs there. Edit: They also said that are to be managed by GPO.
