Hey All,
Currently our org uses Sentinelone and I am very very happy with it but the powers that be now want me to review Defender as its supposedly included in our microsoft license.
My problem is I am having a very hard time trying to find relevant information as microsoft seems to call everything defender.
From reviewing ATP a 4-5 years back it was different that 365 defender but now ATP seems to be called 365 defender or at least thats what i see in sales videos from MS.
As far as i was aware before from blogs like this defender ATP and Defender 365 were different things now it seems from this video defender ATP is called defender 365
Can anyone provide a resource/link/docs that details ATP(or what ever its called) features or better yet S1 vs ATP as i am just getting more and more confused.

Defender represents both products and product suites now. Main suites: M365 Defender - This contains the “core” Defender products that you’re probably familiar with. Defender for Endpoint (EDR/AV), Defender for Cloud Apps (CASB / formerly Microsoft Cloud app Security), Defender for Identity (formerly Advanced Threat Analytics / Azure ATP), Defender for Office 365 (M365 specific controls like safe links / safe attachments). This is all managed through the M365 Defender portal now. Defender for Cloud - This is newer and focuses on Cloud Security. Defender for Servers (EDR/AV), Defender for all the various Azure offerings (storage accounts, SQL, keyvaults, etc). You can enable or disable individual components. Defender ATP is now Defender for Endpoint (p1/p2) & Defender for Servers (p1/p2). They are both AV but the licensing determines the overall features. Defender for Endpoint can still be put on servers, but Defender for Servers is easier to deploy if you have servers in IaaS.

I think the main issue here is, the absolute chaos called MS. I have used S1 and MDE (Microsoft Defender for Endpoint). Basically S1 is easier to use than MDE, and overall a good package. However what you're asking is about all of MS Security. There it's much more difficult to compare, since here we are going into "XDR" territory. So MDI (Defender for Identity) for example looks at Identity data such as Active Directory logs. Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps is something like a CASB and looks at behaviour in Cloud logs etc. Imo it not really a level playing field. If you want to compare S1 against something, it would be crowdstrike. If you want to compare Microsoft Security against something, maybe Cortex XDR or Elastic Security will help. For me in generall this is a licensing issue, if you're on E5 licenses in MS anyway, might as well go for the security. However if you have to upgrade or get the Security addon, I would advise to look into other modern approaches.

For some years we've been using a layered approach to mail filtering. Our mail runs through Spamtitan and then to Defender. This has worked fine, but SpamTitan recently made changes that absolutely tanked the quality of their service.
I'm curious if Defender for O365 is good enough to be the only mail/spam/phishing filter for an organization.

As someone who has used Mimecast in two different companies in the last 5 years and moved both to Defender for Office I say it's fine. The hunting and soft delete abilities are way better than Mimecast and if you have the other Defender XDR products they work nicely together from an alerting point of view.

Defender for Office is a versatile email/phishing/spam defense if you go through the process of hardening the attack surface. Get appropriate licensing to get all advanced features and use powershell to run an ORCA Report (install-module -name orca) to generate a list of security recommendations for best practices. We constantly remove proofpoint and other filtering services in favor of fully managed MDO. Caveat - you need to be able to manage the MDO and if you don’t have the resources or technical knowledge then a hosted service like proofpoint, mimecast, & barracuda are excellent options.
