You've done the right thing by purchasing your domain through My Host NZ — that's a crucial first step, and your money absolutely wasn't wasted. Microsoft 365 for email
Yes to all the above. Don't get your email through your hosting company or domain registrar (not even if they're reselling Microsoft 365.) Instead buy the plan yourself so that you won't have hassles down the road if you move your domain or hosting. You should absolutely have a different, long-term permanent email address. If something happens you'll still be able to recover your 365 password. But make sure it's long-term permanent like Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail that won't disappear. As a site rescue specialist I've seen serious issues where an organization couldn't recover access because the tiny dialup email their founder used has gone under. If the recovery email address is dead then your access is dead. So Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail. You can definitely have email addresses with @yourdomain.name. That's 80%+ of the point. Final point: Microsoft 365 takes email security extremely seriously. You'll want to add their DNS records (ms=verification, SPF, DMARC, possibly CNAMES, etc.) or you'll have problems receiving email notifications (e.g. contact form submissions) from your website. Why does Microsoft need to mess around with a Domain to sell me 365?
The short answer is yes, if you are only subscribed to Office 365 for the apps, and are not using hosted email, you can skip adding your email domain to Office 365, and just use the *.onmicrosoft.com default domain. The only drawback is the users will have a different login name to remember, and if you add the domain to Office 365, you can set the users login name to be the same as their email address, which will make it easier for the user to remember and login with. r/Office365 on Reddit: Can I create a microsoft business account with my business email straight away?
June 13, 2024 -
Hello!
When I want to get a business plan started it seems that the only option is that it forces the onmicrosoft domain to you. But for example if a create and a personal account I can create it with a custom email straight away.
I can see that it reccomends using the DNS-server to get using your own domain... but is there a way to bypass all that and just create a business acount with your own email ?

u/kasparghost69 by default, you are assigned an onmicrosoft.com address to get logged into the admin area of 365. From there, you can add your custom domain(s) which will need to be verified via DNS records that Microsoft provides you with. Once that's all verified, you can use your custom domain as your primary email / login.

This setting is an opt-in setting that allows the Microsoft 365 system administrators to select a verified domain within the tenant. This means that the domain has been validated for ownership. The recommendation is to use a domain that has the appropriate DNS records to facilitate email validation, like SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and MX as this then complies with the RFC compliance for sending and receiving email.
