EDIT : IT'S NOW OPEEEN!!!! GO GO GO GO APPLY!
Hey does anyone knows if the application form is out? so I read about it was released in August or mid-end august so today is september 1 and I havnt heard anything about this one!!
So does anybody know what's going on?
I already enter here and it says https://careers.microsoft.com/v2/global/en/exploremicrosoft
that "Applications are now closed" but as far as I know when I take a look in July-august there was no application open it so I guess they havnt opened that yet?
EDIT: FOLKS seems like it's absolutely gone as well as GOOGLE STEP! I contacted a girl in my college who got in STEP and now a SWE intern at Google she told me that now it's gone!
Hey everybody! I was an explorer summer of 2019, and I've had quite a few people dming me about my experience so I thought I'd compile it & post it publicly!
Timeline
Sent out an application end of August, within a week of applications opening up
Contacted mid-September to do an on-campus interview the next week
Heard back at the beginning of October to sign up for an on-site at the end of November
Received offer beginning of December with 2 weeks to accept/decline
My Resume
Horrible. No project experience, no past internships. I had only taken a 2-semester introductory class at the time of applying. Points in my favor were that I had a 3.9GPA and I went to a target school.
Interviews
First round: string manipulation and behavioral questions
On-site: simple tree question, conceptual questions, PM-style questions, and behavioral questions
Advice
Apply as early as possible. Although I did have friends who applied much later and received their offer in January/February, Microsoft does run out of spots, so I would keep an eye out for the application and apply as soon as you can.
Focus on your resume!! The interview is extremely easy, and this is coming from somebody who had to self-study trees and linked lists and other data structures because I hadn't even gotten to it in class. If you can get through the resume screening, the rest is easy from there. I would highly recommend doing a project if you haven't and putting it on your resume. Highlight any experience you have. If you're too experienced for explore, they will reroute you for the SWE internship (or PM if you're interested in that).
If you know somebody who is on good terms with your campus recruiter, a referral can be very helpful. Not necessary though — I applied online with no referral and somehow made it through.
You do NOT need experience for this internship. Like I said, I had absolutely 0 experience and had to self study data structures for the interview. If you're an incoming freshman/just changed your major to CS, don't let that put you off!! This internship was made for people like you.
You can apply to multiple internships (explore and PM, for example) but they will make the choice for you as to which internship you should interview for.
Finally, please apply for this internship if you are at all interested!! It was an absolutely amazing experience that I'd recommend to anybody. Microsoft has an awesome internship program, they pay pretty well ($32/hour in 2019, not sure if that's changed), and it's altogether a great experience. And you do not actually need to be an URM in the strictest sense. There were white male explorer interns, who talked about their socioeconomic class/cultural background for their diversity. Seriously, if you're even thinking about it, apply. Worst they can do is say no. :)
I'm happy to do resume reviews and chat privately if you're interested in learning more. Hope this helps!

Hey! Has anyone heard back from Microsoft explore after applying?
Hello! I have an upcoming interview for Sophomore Microsoft Explore Internship and I was wondering if anyone had been through the interview process could give any advice or idea on what to expect. I’ve been going through the Blind 75 and writing down answers to Behavioral/Product Management questions, if there’s anything else I should be doing please let me know!
I applied back in november and havent heard anything back. When I go to the action center it says my application is still under review but when I check the inactive section it says transferred. Does anyone elses say this or did I just never turn in my resume correctly?
I never got a rejection email so im unsure if im even being considered.
Hello everyone,
Starting fall 2023, I’m going to be a freshman at the UW studying CS. I want to apply to Microsoft’s Explore program. I have 3 years of CS experience (AP Computer Science A + other courses), and have taken AP Calc AB and BC at my high school. I was just curious when the application for the internship opens. I’ve heard August 2023, September 2023 and March 2024 (this is for summer 2024 btw). I’ve looked at the website of the explore program and there’s not date on there and google wasn’t helpful either. Thank you for the help :)
tl;dr I want to apply to the Microsoft Explore internships and can’t find when applications open
Hey guys! I know it will open soon (I think next month) and have my resume prepared but is it possible to be overqualified for it? I saw someone say it on another reddit post saying that you will be transferred to the SWE internship application (maybe it's bs but idk). I've also heard that it's quite random because not many people have experiences because they are freshmen and that the recruiters will have to lower their expectations. Would love to hear from anyone that got accepted into it. Also would love for anyone to talk about their Nvidia Ignite internship process (like when they received the interview after applying...). Thanks
hello everyone!
so i have a final round interview coming up in about 2 weeks time for the Microsoft Explore Internship.
i just wanted to get some advice from past Interns or anyone who may have info on it. what do I need to prep on¿
i'm a freshman, not a leetcode monster. i just have a fair amount of knowledge in coding and that's cos of the python course I'm presently taking in school.
i'd like to know what to focus my energy on. what specific dsa topics do I need to look up that is commonly asked, also should I expect behavioral and PM questions¿ if so what kinds should I focus on.
if you have an helpful resource I can look up to gain insights, I'd definitely appreciate it.
I just heard back from Microsoft and I passed the resume screening and was invited to the first round interview via phone.
What should I expect? What kind of questions are asked? How to I prepare? Anything to avoid?
I'm a freshman so I'm a little lost. I searched up previous posts asking similar questions but they were a little dated, so I figured I'd ask again.
I saw that the explore applications just opened, and I'm not ready to submit a resume yet. Also, applications opened up earlier than last year I think. What is the latest you think I could submit my application and have it be considered? Would mid-August be okay?
Thanks in advance!
Apparently some people already got oa invite from explore??
I have been searching on where to apply but I can't find any place for that. Does that mean they haven't opened yet or the positions have been filled?
Also what are some other places for internship for first year students apart from Google Step, Meta.
hey everyone, I'm an incoming freshman in the math+cs (math of computation) pre-major at UCLA and am very seriously considering applying to Microsoft explore. I've tons of math tutoring experience and have done assisted in research at a startup but only have basic programming experience (equivalent to that of someone who's completed intro cs courses). I def want to keep software development open as a future career choice and believe explore can help me further my interest and skill. The explore app opened in mid-July and I was wondering if applying without any projects would prevent me from even getting past the resume screen? Should I do some projects and apply a couple of weeks later or apply now without any (since they accept people on a rolling basis)? Other than the projects and my past experience, what else should I add to my resume (since I am not even done with course registration for first year yet)? If anyone has a sample Microsoft explore/ freshman resume template that I could use for reference it'd be great!
Any other tips y'all have on applying for explore/ other freshman internship programs would also be really helpful!
PS my bad if I seem oblivious, I'm relatively new to the whole internship application process. TIA!
Programs like explore and step do not expect a ton of experience. They look for candidates with strong potential. Of course, some programming background is nice, but applying early is more important. Just my two cents
For freshman sophomore programs they really don't expect much. It would be really great if you do have a project or two from high school or this summer though! As you said it's rolling basis, so applying earlier rather then later is pretty crucial for a decent shot of getting in so just keep that in mind.
I totally understand being lost coming into this major, so I made a video on all the things I wished I knew going into freshman year. I also just released a video all about writing a good tech resume, so feel free to check those out for more information! Good luck!
Hello!
I am currently applying for the Microsoft Explore Program Internship for College Freshmen, and I wanted to hear from anyone who has done this internship in the past about the type of work they did and their overall experience during the internship.
Thanks in advance!
Hey, has anybody heard back aka gotten an interview or something from Google step or Microsoft explore internship yet for summer 2025? First year ones btw not the sophomore ones. Thanks
Just got an interview for Microsoft Explore. I'm a freshman and this is my first cs interview so I'm kind of nervous. Has anyone already done an interview for Microsoft Explore and what was it like? Do they cater the questions to the education level of the applicant? Any advice or tips?
Edit: It says the interview is by phone and I'll be asked behavioral, problem-solving, and technical questions.
Edit v2: Found a old thread
Edit v3: Made it to the second round
Hey guys,
I'm a freshman and I recently got an interview for the Microsoft Explore program thats coming up in a week. I am relatively new to CS, I took an intro programming class in 11th grade that went over the very basics of Java, and I'm currently in an intro CS class. I am going through the Cracking the Coding Interview book and wondering what is necessary for me to learn/review for the interview. I've never taken an algorithm class so the Big O and algorithms sections are completely new to me. I am wondering if I need to learn this or if I should just focus on getting better with Python, which is the language I'm learning/the class I'm taking now.
If it's the phone screen then there's nothing to worry about-- they don't ask coding questions, and instead ask things like how to explain a computer to a five year old, how would you design a coffeemaker for an astronaut, what Microsoft product is your favorite, etc. (and in this case they seem to reuse a lot of questions and I would recommend checking out glassdoor to prep for them.)
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD LUCK FRIEND!!!!!! i dont know much about interviews but you got this, just dont be creepy!!!
I’m a freshman CS major. I secured an internship for this summer at a large non-tech company. I’d really like to intern at a tech company next summer when I’m a sophomore and I was considering applying to some underclassman-specific internships such as the ones listed in the title. I was just wondering what do they look for in applicants? My resume will have some projects in addition to the internship.
I haven't gotten a response yet for the Microsoft Explore Internship. Should I assume I'm done for?
