I really can't understand why Microsoft is worth so much more than Google. In the biggest technology revolution ever: AI, Google is crushing it on every front. They have Gemini, Chrome, Quantum Chips, Pixel, Glasses, Android, Waymo, TPUs, are undisputed data center kings etc. They most likely will dominate the AI revolution. How come Microsoft is worth so much more then? Curious about your thoughts.

September 1, 2024 - Like, if I buy $X worth of shares at time T1, then sell at time T2, how much money did I make? ... I wouldn't say Google is performing poorly. An 18% return is nothing to sneeze at. But yeah, both Google and Microsoft have underperformed the S&P 500 (19.09%) and Google is about equal to the VTI (18.14%, an index of the entire US stock market).

Competition. It's not just a buzzword. In order for the consumer to get the best product, there needs to be competition. Microsoft saved Apple (look it up) to make sure they weren't the only vendor in the market. Google is going to have issues because they pushed too many competitors out of the market. Sony wants Xbox and Nintendo to continue to be successful, just not in first place. Microsoft wouldn't buy Sony because it doesn't fill a gap in the Microsoft portfolio and would remove a primary competitor off the board. With only Nintendo Switch as a competitor, we'd be back to "monopoly" talk, just like what's happening with Google.

The market cap isn’t even the metric you want to look at. MSFT has $78bn in “cash on hand” meaning they could finance about 40% of an acquisition (assuming a premium $200bn-ish buyout price) with liquid assets. But… it’s never gonna happen. The EU and FTC might have relented and let Blizzard-Activision happen but Sony would be a whole ‘nother level of anti-trust.
