The license is tied to your Microsoft account. If you format your computer, you just log into the ms account in office, and it moves the license to that installation. I think you may be limited on the number of times you can do it per year to keep someone from bouncing between installations. Answer from P440CPJ on reddit.com

Where can I purchase the MS Office 2021 one time purchase? I tried in the Microsoft website but when I click the link it redirects to Microsoft365 or Microsoft 2024 instead. Please do not give me links to pirate. I am willing and able to buy a subscription. Its just that I want 2021 because maybe it will be cheaper but at least a legit purchase from microsoft.

r/microsoftoffice on Reddit: Office 2021 vs 2024 standalone one time digital download and license
February 1, 2025 -

I have an old MBP laptop where I run Microsoft 2019 and have reinstalled it a few times when I've formatted my laptop. I'm a solo user. I have a new laptop and was going to install it - but I assume I'd need to uninstall it on my old - I assume it's one license, one device at a time, but not sure. Anyway, I was looking at some deals where you can buy a one-time license for either MS Office 2019 or 2024. These ones seem to say download one time for one computer - which reads different than when I bought 2019. Does anyone know if I can ever reinstall it if I end up reformatting a computer or if I get a new computer in the future, or is it literally one install one time and that's it? Anyone have any experience with both versions - is one better than the other? I am not interested in a subscription model as I don't use it that much to make it worth it, and certainly not interested in saving to the cloud. In the last year, I seem to recall MS announcing some features that seemed kind of invasive for privacy, but I think it was because you saved everything to the cloud. Not interested in that. Thanks for any feedback.

r/microsoft on Reddit: What’s the cheapest way for one person to purchase Microsoft Word and Excel?
June 1, 2024 -

I like to use Word and Excel for my hobbies as I find they’re much easier to use than Google Docs and Sheets and they don’t require me to open my documents in my web browser, however the cost seems to be where I’m having second thoughts. Unfortunately the price of $8.00+tax/mo is too much for me to afford at the moment due to the cost of other more essential bills increasing. Is there a more cost effective way to purchase Word and Excel? I do not need all the other programs; no PowerPoint, no OneNote, no Outlook, etc.

Besides switching to Google’s alternative, what would you suggest?

Here are all possible options: Use the Word and Excel online for free with your Microsoft Account (web apps are light apps and don't have all of the Desktop app features). Buy a Microsoft 365 Personal monthly subscription for $6.99 USD or $8 CAD per month Buy a Microsoft 365 Personal yearly subscription for $69.99 USD or $79.99 CAD per year. You basically get 2 months free when you switch to yearly billing. (Works out to $5.83 USD or $6.67 CAD per month) Buy Microsoft Office Home & Student 2021 for a one-time payment of $149.99 USD or $169 CAD. This version of Microsoft Office is going to be supported until October 2026, so the cost works out to approx. $5.17 USD or $5.86 CAD per month right now. You are allowed to use the software past the end date but you won't get anymore updates or security fixes, so it's not recommended to use this version too much longer past the end of support date. (You're opening up your computer to several vulnerabilities when using unsupported versions of Microsoft Office). Wait for Office Home & Student 2024 which is coming out later this year . It will be a one-time payment of $149.99 USD or $169 CAD, and will have 5 years of support. So the cost will work out to be $2.50 USD or $2.82 CAD per month if you buy it at the time of release. Again, you can use this past the end of support date to lower your monthly cost even further, but you do so at the risk of exposing your computer to security risks. If you just want a standard word processor and spreadsheet app that will have basic compatibility with Microsoft Office files, there are free alternatives such as WPS Office , LibraOffice , or FreeOffice . You might have compatibility issues using these free apps while working with documents created in Microsoft Office that have advanced formatting or macros, etc. More info: You can buy Word or Excel by themselves without the other Office apps, but these cost $159 USD or CAD each, so it's not worth it. The subscription version is for 1 person across all their devices (Use it on up to 5 computers, tablets, or phones at the same time). The one-time payment version is for 1 computer only. The subscription version releases new features as they come out. New features are generally not released to one-time payment versions. If these costs seem high, keep in mind that Office 2021 is approaching end of life, so it really isn't a good deal right now because Office 2024 is coming soon. The subscription version also includes 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage which makes it a pretty great offer. For only $5.83 USD or $6.67CAD per month you get the full Microsoft Office suite, plus 1TB of cloud storage. To compare, Google Drive or Dropbox costs $10 USD or $14 CAD per month for 2TB of cloud storage and doesn't come with an Office Suite. Hope that helps!

I'm trying to choose between the 2 products. On one hand, I like the idea of owning the software and I've always owned one. And I don't look forward to paying $99 per year just to lease it when you can get Office 2021 for around $129.

So Office 2021 seems to be a good deal, right? But is there any difference between Office 20221 and Office365? I mainly use Excel: is Excel in Office365 a more advanced version with certain functions not available via Office 2021? For example, I use xlookup a lot and I know that's available via Office 2021 (I'm currently using Office 2010). When is the next major release of Office?

Plus is there any issue with privacy when using Office365? The thing is constantly updating in the background so any danger of uploading your important and private documents and data?

I upgraded my wife's laptop PC from the 7 year old one she's been using and I'm doing all the data transfer and setup and everything. She said she needs just the basics; Word, Excel PowerPoint, and Outlook.

I remember back in the day I'd just buy the actual disk with the product key on the back or DL'ed the program and the paid for a product key and that copy of Microsoft Office was "yours" or whatever. Now it seems to be some sort of ongoing subscription service?? Yeah, no... I don't want to deal with a subscription. I've got enough subscription services in my life and don't need one for software on my PC. I'll go the third part software route before.

Is there a way to just buy these Microsoft office programs outright like before? She doesn't even need the latest/greatest releases like Office 365 or whatever? Older 2021 or whatever versions are fine I'm sure.

Microsoft still sells a perpetual licensed version of Office. The current version is Office 2021. Consumer licenses for Office 2024 should be available soon, though. EDIT: Just to note, you mentioned wanting Outlook in your post. Home & Student 2021 doesn't include Outlook, so you would need Home & Business 2021. Also keep in mind that it's licensed for 1 PC, so you can't install it on multiple machines.

It's not that confusing. At least 80% of people can get by with Office Online, Microsoft's free office suite. The only "catch" to this is that it's much, much easier to use if you have a OneDrive account (and it requires you to be online, of course). However, every Windows user gets a free 5GB account, so if she's cool with storing her docs in OD, then you can use this for free: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/free-office-online-for-the-web If you really just want the standalone apps, then there's Microsoft Office Home & Student (Word, Excel, PowerPoint for $149) and Microsoft Home & Business (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook for $229). They're available from Amazon & Microsoft's own online store, or you can locally buy a shrink-wrapped box with a card inside. Note that MS stopped making Office on discs about 10 years ago. Also, if she's using Office in any kind of business capacity you're supposed to buy Home & Business, although it's not like the Microsoft Police are gonna kick down your door if you don't. Of course, these versions of Office don't receive feature updates, and the standalone version of Office dates to 2021. There is a new 2024 version coming out soon if you can wait, but if you need Office NOW and you refuse to buy Microsoft 365, then you're gonna get a 3 year-old office suite. Three of the big advantages to using Microsoft 365 are that: a) you always have the most up-to-date version of Office... not just with bug fixes and security updates, but new features, too; and b) Microsoft 365 allows 5 installs per user. So Microsoft 365 Personal lets one user install Office on up to 5 desktops and laptops. So if you have 3 desktops and 2 laptops, Office only costs you $13.99/year. Microsoft 365 Family allows up to 5 installs for up to 6 users, so 30 installs of Office for $99.95/year (in the US, your local price may vary); and c) Microsoft 365 comes with a 1TB of OneDrive storage per user. This is the real killer app of Microsoft 365. The way I see it, I'm officially paying $69.95 for one year of OneDrive and get Office for "free". Unofficially, I pay far less because I stock up when M365 Personal is on sale. I think I calculated it costing some something like $47/year buy buying on sale, which is less than $25/device/year.

r/microsoft on Reddit: Yearly subscription or one-time purchase?
September 3, 2022 -

I would like to download Word, Powerpoint, and Excel on my home computer as these programs are required for my job. However, I am unsure which would be better: a yearly subscription or a one time purchase.

Here is some information on my current situation:

• I use these program to create and use work files.

• I have also used these programs for personal use for years.

• My home internet is often slow.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Edit: Thanks everyone for all the replies! I decided to go with the one-time purchase. The only upside I see with the subscription is the cloud storage but I probably wouldn't use it.

I wanted to add that I cannot download Microsoft Office on my personal computer despite my job. I have tried and this is the message I receive: "You currently have not been assigned an Office license that includes the Office desktop apps.". I will not be responding to anymore comments on the matter, however I appreciate that people took the time to write down this information.

First of all, Microsoft offers Google Docs-like Office webapps for free. If all you need is basic Microsoft Word, go to office.com and sign up (or login with a Microsoft Account, or your Office Account (which started with Office 2013, I believe). More info on free Office from MSFT itself here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/free-office-online-for-the-web Do you have a need for cloud storage? Because if you have Dropbox or Google Drive - or have been thinking of getting one - you may want Microsoft 365. The 1TB OneDrive account included with a M365 account is the secret killer app of Office 365. You can also install Office on up to 5 devices per account, so if you have a desktop and laptop you can install on both, which can be a savings. Assuming you're in the US, Microsoft 365 Personal is $69.99/year. This is $50/year cheaper than Dropbox, and you even get Office "for free" if you look at it that way (Dropbox used to be $99/year for 1TB of space, so it used to be an even better deal). What's more, Amazon and Microsoft themselves put subscriptions on sale once or twice a year, and subs are stackable. The last time Amazon had Microsoft 365 Personal on sale I bought three years at $39/year, so even if you pay full price the first year, it lowers out over time. This year I'm paying around $40 to have Office on my laptop and desktop and have a 1TB cloud account. It's a good deal. If your family has computers, there's Microsoft 365 Family. That's $99/year for up to six users, each with 5 Office installs. So, up to 30 installs of Office and six 1TB OneDrive accounts total. FWIW, Microsoft 365 is fully downloadable and installable software. You only need the Internet to download the apps the first time, and later for monthly updates. You'll also need to connect at least once a month to verify your license.

Hello everyone.

I installed and activated Windows 11 not long ago. As an average client, I didn't know I have to separately acquire the Office packet in order to work in Word, Excel & Powerpoint (literally the main point of getting my PC).

I navigated through the options but Windows 11 continues to harass me with monthly subscription. I'm a old schooler, I want to purchase an activation code for a one-time payment for the Office programs. I dislike the subscription system for services that has invaded the world.

Also, as an old timer, I don't want anything to do with OneDrive and online or cloud-based office tools, I have several HDDs for backup. Can anyone help me with this? Is it still possible to just pay and play, meaning having the Office programs locally in my PC and call it a day?

So i have been an Office 365 family subscriber for the last few years. I have decided to cancel this year as most of the users in my house hold don’t use it and i find myself rarely using it, except for outlook.

I would like to just purchase the one off license for my personal computer just for the odd occasion that I use it. The key is to have outlook though.

Seems like the license from Microsoft that includes outlook is very expensive, however there are plenty of 3rd party sellers that sell it at a fraction of the price. What’s the catch? Are there any risks or is it legit?

I am worried that the license would work the first time but if i every needed to re-install the software it wouldn’t work again. Has anyone had any experience with these 3rd party sellers?

Thanks you!!
