Thank you once again for getting back to me so quickly.
You've cleared everything up perfectly. Great to know 2021 creates its own desktop icons to make access easy, and distinct from the trial apps which now appear in the file explorer list.
Fortunately I hadn't yet opened or accessed the trial versions before I was clear about the two versions. Thus there are no changes to any settings. I'm happy I refrained from doing so to keep the new 2021 download apps clean.
If I run into any problems downloading or installing 2021 this week I will seek out your help once more. But hopefully, all will go smoothly. I'll keep your notes to me tonight with your instructions and suggestions close at hand when I go go through the process.

If you have a trial version of Office 365 installed on your computer, you can still install Office 2021 (one-time purchase) without any conflicts. The two versions of Office will exist separately on your computer and won't interfere with each other.
When you install Office 2021, it will create a new folder and install the programs into that folder. The trial version of Office 365 will remain in its own folder and won't be overwritten or removed by the installation of Office 2021.
You don't need to remove the trial version of Office 365 before installing Office 2021. However, if you want to free up disk space or simply don't need the trial version anymore, you can uninstall it via the Control Panel.
To be on the safe side, you can uninstall the trial version of Office 365 before installing Office 2021. To do this, go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features, find the Office apps, and select Uninstall. Once you have uninstalled the trial version, you can then download and install Office 2021.
If you prefer not to uninstall the trial version, you can simply install Office 2021 and it should override the trial version without any conflicts.
Also, when you purchase Office 2021, you are getting the one-time purchase version and not the subscription-based Office 365. The one-time purchase version is a standalone product that does not require a monthly subscription fee.
