It's a personal choice. An aversion to subscriptions is often more of an issue of principles than a practical one, in my experience. Subscriptions provide always up to date software, and new features at regular intervals. There are often other perks, such as (in the case of MS365 Family) the abilty to share your subscription with up to 5 other family members, each of whom get 1TB of OneDrive storage. The cloud storage alone is worth the entire price of the subscription to some people. Perpetual licenses allow you to use a product until it is no longer supported, or no longer works on whatever future OS version you use. If you are happy with the feature set and see no reason to upgrade frequently, then you will probably net out ahead in terms of total cost. But if you tend to upgrade every 2-3 years as new versions are released, you will end up paying as much or more in licensing fees as you would have paid for the subscription. There are only two software subscriptions I religously pay for: MS365 and Creative Cloud, because I require these products for my business and there are no real substitutes (for me). But if LibreOffice floats your boat, enjoy it. Or, if you are good with storing your files in OneDrive, then you can also use the Office web apps for free with a consumer Microsoft account. I've been using MS Excel 2000 for a long time now. But just moved up from Windows 10 to Windows 11 on a new (older, but reconditioned) computer.
I use Excel a lot for home or personal use. Inventories, personal databases, graphs of trends of things. I like to think I'm hot shit on a computer, but I'm really probably just medium-competent.
I want to move up to a newer version of Excel. Microsoft sells a one-time, non-transferrable download of Home Office 2024 for $149. Or I could rely on the cloud, free Microsoft365 online. I'm kinda old school, so I like the idea of having my own copy on my own desktop. I'm not spying for Russia or anything, yet I worry about privacy issues with the cloud. But sometimes even old dogs learn new tricks.
Which way should I go? Pro & Cons?

I am thinking of spending the 250$ to buy office 2024 for home and Bussiness but at the same time I feel its a waist I do have a windows laptop although. I use but I noticed I use my linux machines more then I do my windows. And I am fine and happy with using LibreOffice which is free is their a reason why using office is better then using say something like LibreOffice?

Office 365 is really annoying for me because it keeps asking me to login all the time. Wouldn’t recommend.

Sincerely many thanks for your help. It is most appreciated. I've downloaded Office but I am unable to activate it. Microsoft sends me a 'new' account recovery code and then Microsoft tells me that the code that they just sent me isn't recognized. The frustration is absolutely maddening...

Here are the recommended steps to activate and install Office 2024 after purchasing a key.
- If you purchased an Office key from a valid source, you should be able to activate it by Office.com/setup or Microsoft365.com/setup entering the key.
- If activated correctly, when you go to “Services & Subscriptions”, you can find your activated license here and click “Install” here to start the download.
- After the installation is complete, log in to your Microsoft account associated with the key. See if it works.
Or you can also download Office 2024 installer directly offline via the following link, depending on the version you have:
- Office 2024 Home
- Office 2024 Home and Business
Once the installation is complete, log in to your Microsoft account and enter your key to activate it. If you have already activated through the website, just log in to your Microsoft account.
