r/WindowsHelp on Reddit: The solution on how to fix Microsoft Store: apps failing to update
November 28, 2024 -

During November 2024, many of us faced a very annoying issue with MS Store.

It seems to happen on Win 10 and 11.

Symptoms

Apps fails to:

  • update with the message: “Something happened on our end”

    • returned errors can be: 0x800706BE, 0x800706BA but mostly 0x80073CF9

  • uninstalled, maybe reset either

    • returned errors: 0x80073CFA New apps can be downloaded and installed though.

Any AppxPackage commands will fail to update or remove package with the same errors. winget upgrade return there is no app to upgrade while you know it is wrong.

Most of common methods to fix the store and apps will fail.

Solutions

Try method 4 only if previous methods failed.

Method 1

Solution mentioned here. Go to Windows Settings Win+I -> Apps -> Apps & Features. Search for Microsoft Windows App Runtime Singleton by typing singleton. Click on Advanced options then Terminate, repair then reset if repair failed. Next, open this link , click on View in store then try to update this app from there clicking retry or else. If it works, try to update your apps in the MS Store. If it still fails, try next method.

Method 2

Solution posted here

  • Download the latest WinAppSDK ( https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/windows-app-sdk/downloads ) (Don't install it yet)

  • Close all apps, and restart PC

  • Install the previously downloaded latest WinAppSDK

  • Open Microsoft Store App and hit RETRY for each app that was 'stuck' one-by-one ... they should all now install correctly without errors.

Method 3

As mentioned here, this method was successful for one user.

Open a PowerShell console as admin. Don’t use the Terminal app but the built-in PowerShell console. Run these commands one by one:

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
sfc /scannow

Reboot PC Right click on the MS Store startup icon>more>settings and apply repair AND reset. If it succeeds or not, reboot PC again. Test if MS Store is fixed by running the updates.

Method 4: in-place upgrade

That’s the method that worked for me. YOU NEED AT LEAST 40 GB OF FREE SPACE ON YOUR C:\ DRIVE. If not, you will have to proceed with a fresh Windows install. Sorry

  • Download the media creation tool provided by MS.

    • Go there for Win 10 or there for Win 11 and click the download button below the Create Windows 10 installation media section

  • Just follow the steps, letting all options by default. Just be sure at the end that the option that preserves your data and apps is checked.

This will reinstall Windows just like if you were upgrading it, preserving your data and apps, for the most of them. Some custom very specific settings can be reset but most users are not concerned as they never touch them. Here are the reset I noticed:

  • custom keyboard layout installed with kbedit are gone

  • hyperenabledoesn’t seem to run at start

  • those registry values were reset if there were customized like:

; To disable the win+shift+ctrl+alt shortcut that by default opens online Office apps
; restart explorer to apply
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"DisabledHotkeys"="VCFGHOYZQN"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\ms-officeapp\Shell\Open\Command]
@="rundll32"
  • comment if you know other settings reset by the upgrade process

r/Surface on Reddit: I've Tried Everything but the Microsoft Store still won't load.
July 21, 2023 -

Hello everyone hoping I can find an answer for this irritating topic. I bought this Surface RT second hand without the dock and I first noticed that the Microsoft Store will not load it's just an infinite circle. I have factory reset the device more than 2 times one with files one completely wiping the whole drive but no fix. Just recently I was trouble shooting it and again the Store Wont load I have also tried clearing the cashe with the Wsreset.exe nothing I have done so many updates over 200 I am not lying. After all of this updating and tips and tricks that didn't work I just don't know what to do anymore and was hoping some other people could provide some insight on how to get the Microsoft Store to load. I ap just hoping that someone can help thanks.

r/Surface on Reddit: Cannot install the Surface app, MS store not working and won't install either
April 21, 2023 -

Bought a used SP 6 and for some reason it will not install the MS Store even through Powershell. Also since the Surface app is installed through the store that won't work either. Device had been factory reset.

I've tried multiple websites Powershell commands to try to install the store but no luck. I did use a local account, but that to my knowledge just means you have to authenticate when using the Store.

Any ideas?

Edit: realized I forgot to include the error...

You’ll need a new app to open this ms-windows-store

Good day! This is Rodney A. an independent Microsoft Expert. My goal is to resolve your issue in a timely manner.

If your Microsoft Store app isn't working, you can try these steps: check for Windows updates, clear the Microsoft Store cache by running "wsreset.exe" in the Run dialog, run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter in your settings, restart your computer, and if necessary, reset the Microsoft Store app itself through your system settings.

Key troubleshooting steps:

Check for Windows updates:

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install any available updates.

Clear the Microsoft Store cache:

Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.

Type "wsreset.exe" and press Enter.

A blank command prompt window will appear and then close automatically, restarting the Microsoft Store.

Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter:

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.

Select "Windows Store Apps" and click "Run the troubleshooter".

Restart your computer:

Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary issues.

Reset the Microsoft Store app:

Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features.

Find "Microsoft Store" and select "Advanced options".

Click "Reset" to reset the app to its default settings.

Other things to check:

Internet connection: Ensure you have a stable internet connection.

Account details: Double-check that you are signed in with the correct Microsoft account.

Region settings: Verify that your region settings are correct.

Third-party antivirus software: Temporarily disable your antivirus to see if it is interfering.

If none of these steps work, you might need to contact Microsoft support for further assistance.

Let me know how it goes. Thank you!

r/WindowsHelp on Reddit: Microsoft Store unable to download or update apps on Windows 11.
December 3, 2023 -

Hey!

Since I performed a clean install of Windows 11 on my new drive, the Microsoft Store is not able to update apps anymore. When selecting a new app to download or when updating an existing app, the library shows "Pending" or "Downloading" on the app. I waited for an hour and none have finished yet.

In the screenshot below, you can see the behaviour: https://imgur.com/a/hrD1mIX

Things I have tried:- Performed a clean install of Windows 11 (twice)
- Updated Windows to latest version|
- Under the Microsoft Store app options selected repair and reset.|
- Signed out and back in again in the Microsoft store
- Ran wsreset.exe
- Ran Windows store apps troubleshooter (says it couldn't identify any problems)
- Used System File Checker, as explained here (which reported no issues)
- Re-registered the store app using: Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

None of these seem to have solved the issue. Does anyone know anything else I can try? Thanks!

-- Update --

This issue seemed to be on Microsoft's end, and was automatically resolved for me today (dec, 3rd).

Holy s**t. A lot of people having the EXACT issue as me. Literally just built a new PC for my kid's friend. went to update the apps so he could play his game pass games and everything installed but Gambar, Windows Web Experience Pack and the Xbox app. Been looking for a fix for HOURS. Also attempted to update apps on my own PC and the same thing happened but it was only Windows Web Experience Pack that wouldn't update. Hopefully there's a fix soon.

Temporary Solution for Users Looking to Solely use the Xbox App: - Open the "Microsoft Store App" - Search for "Xbox Insider Hub" and click "Get" - Let the Microsoft Store download and Install it (It will work unlike the other apps) - This download will take time so be patient and don't touch the other frozen updates - Open Xbox Insider Hub when it's finished - Go to Previews and scroll down to PC Gaming - Click on it and Join the Preview Program - Let it install, this process also takes a long time. - Once "Pending" turns into "Manage" - Restart your PC - Once back to Windows, open the Microsoft Store, Click Library (Bottom) - Click the three dots on each frozen app update and click "Cancel Download" - After all have been closed, click on the "Get Updates" Button - Install the Xbox App - This one took about 15 minutes but it DID WORK this time. So be super patient. - Open Xbox App after it downloads and enjoy the beta version for now Hopefully Microsoft fixes this issue soon, it drove me insane. Cheers everyone!
