r/WindowsHelp on Reddit: The solution on how to fix Microsoft Store: apps failing to update
November 28, 2024 -

During November 2024, many of us faced a very annoying issue with MS Store.

It seems to happen on Win 10 and 11.

Symptoms

Apps fails to:

  • update with the message: “Something happened on our end”

    • returned errors can be: 0x800706BE, 0x800706BA but mostly 0x80073CF9

  • uninstalled, maybe reset either

    • returned errors: 0x80073CFA New apps can be downloaded and installed though.

Any AppxPackage commands will fail to update or remove package with the same errors. winget upgrade return there is no app to upgrade while you know it is wrong.

Most of common methods to fix the store and apps will fail.

Solutions

Try method 4 only if previous methods failed.

Method 1

Solution mentioned here. Go to Windows Settings Win+I -> Apps -> Apps & Features. Search for Microsoft Windows App Runtime Singleton by typing singleton. Click on Advanced options then Terminate, repair then reset if repair failed. Next, open this link , click on View in store then try to update this app from there clicking retry or else. If it works, try to update your apps in the MS Store. If it still fails, try next method.

Method 2

Solution posted here

  • Download the latest WinAppSDK ( https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/windows-app-sdk/downloads ) (Don't install it yet)

  • Close all apps, and restart PC

  • Install the previously downloaded latest WinAppSDK

  • Open Microsoft Store App and hit RETRY for each app that was 'stuck' one-by-one ... they should all now install correctly without errors.

Method 3

As mentioned here, this method was successful for one user.

Open a PowerShell console as admin. Don’t use the Terminal app but the built-in PowerShell console. Run these commands one by one:

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
sfc /scannow

Reboot PC Right click on the MS Store startup icon>more>settings and apply repair AND reset. If it succeeds or not, reboot PC again. Test if MS Store is fixed by running the updates.

Method 4: in-place upgrade

That’s the method that worked for me. YOU NEED AT LEAST 40 GB OF FREE SPACE ON YOUR C:\ DRIVE. If not, you will have to proceed with a fresh Windows install. Sorry

  • Download the media creation tool provided by MS.

    • Go there for Win 10 or there for Win 11 and click the download button below the Create Windows 10 installation media section

  • Just follow the steps, letting all options by default. Just be sure at the end that the option that preserves your data and apps is checked.

This will reinstall Windows just like if you were upgrading it, preserving your data and apps, for the most of them. Some custom very specific settings can be reset but most users are not concerned as they never touch them. Here are the reset I noticed:

  • custom keyboard layout installed with kbedit are gone

  • hyperenabledoesn’t seem to run at start

  • those registry values were reset if there were customized like:

; To disable the win+shift+ctrl+alt shortcut that by default opens online Office apps
; restart explorer to apply
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"DisabledHotkeys"="VCFGHOYZQN"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\ms-officeapp\Shell\Open\Command]
@="rundll32"
  • comment if you know other settings reset by the upgrade process

If that does not work, try resetting the software distribution folder: Before carrying out this procedure, disconnect from the Internet. That means turning off Wi-Fi and disconnecting from a wired connection. If you don't, Windows 10 will indicate some files are in use and cannot be modified or the command will be non-responsive.

r/Windows10 on Reddit: Can't update windows, can't use Microsoft Store
October 22, 2023 -

I recently formatted/reset my Windows and since then, I haven't been able to use Microsoft Store to download or update apps. I found out later that it might be because Windows updates are off, so I kept digging until I found that the "Windows Update" service is disabled in the "Services" menu.

I kept trying to enable it, but it gives me an " Access Denied" message. I tried using CMD to take ownership of AppData, tried modifying things in Group Policy and tried modifying Security Settings of the folder among other things. Still the Windows Updates service is disabled.

I'd appreciate any ideas/suggestions!

UPDATE: I finally managed to get it working! Turns out I had to change ownership of certain services (mainly just the Windows Update service) from regedit before I could control/change them through the Services menu. Thanks for the responses, some of them were pretty close to solving the issue!

Hi to who ever is still having this issue.

I have been forced to reinstall WIN 10 on my Lenovo ideapad after failing, many times, to get WIN 11 to work properly.

I never had the problem of the App Store locking up as I am now after successfully reinstalling WIN 10. None of the proposed answers work... so please if there is a known solution could someone from MS please advise. Oh and please don't tell me to go back to basics i.e. check network port settings, check for Win updates etc,,, as I already have on multiple occasions. It looks like MS App Store still has big issues and now that Win 11 is here I MS aren't interested in fixing it, that's judging by the responses I have read thus far on the web..

Hello,

First, you can try resetting the Microsoft Store cache: Running wsreset.exe and then a blank Command Prompt window will open, and after a few seconds the window will close, and Microsoft Store will open automatically.

Additionally, creating a new local administrator account and check if the issue persists.

Contrary to the issue of Windows Update, please try the following steps:

  1. Run Troubleshooter
Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Windows Update > Run the Troubleshooter.
  2. Use Command Prompt commands.
    > Open Command prompt as Administrator.
    > Type/copy the commands below , enter 1 by 1.
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop cryptSvc
    net stop bits
    net stop msiserver
    ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
    ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
    net start wuauserv
    net start cryptSvc
    net start bits
    net start msiserver
    > Close the Command Prompt and restart your computer then try to update again.
  3. Use System File Checker to check and fix corrupted system files which may be the cause of the issue. Please refer to the link.

Hi Calen. I'm Greg, awarded MVP for eleven years, Volunteer Moderator, and Independent Advisor here to help you until this is resolved.

Do you even still have the Store, as lately after uninstalling it the only way to reinstall is to run a Repair Install from the latest Windows 10 media (Step 11 below). But first I'll give you everything possible that works to fix the Store, based on helping to fix it daily for years here. Even if you've tried a step, please do it over in this sequence:

  1. Try updating Store apps: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402625....

Check also the Windows 10 Version number at Settings > System > About. If less than 1909 skip to Step 11 to upgrade to the latest by the most stable method.

  1. Right click on the time and date in the far right corner of the taskbar. Choose Adjust Date and time settings, at the top make sure the time is correct. If it’s wrong, manually adjust it and make sure the sliders for Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically are set to on.
  2. Type Services in Search box, run Services app as Administrator, open Windows Update Service and Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Stop both.

Press “Windows (flag) key + R,” copy and paste C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ press the Enter button.

This folder has all the files related to Windows updates.

Open the “Download” folder, select and delete all the files.

Restart Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer services in Services app by opening both and choosing Start.

  1. Try running the Windows Store apps Troubleshooter in Windows Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  2. Type CMD in Search box, Run CMD as administrator, type WSReset.exe and hit Enter. Or in the Search type wsreset.exe select Run as administrator.
  3. If that fails to fix the problem go to Windows Settings > Apps > Apps & Features to highlight Microsoft Store, choose Advanced Options, then Reset. After it resets, restart PC.
  4. If that fails then re-register the Microsoft Store:

Type CMD in Search, run as Admin, copy and paste into box:

powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.xml

If you receive error "Cannot find path 'C:\AppxManifest.xml' because it does not exist" it means the Store was uninstalled. You can try the advanced fixes proposed in https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/win...

or skip to Step 11 below to reinstall Windows including the Store while keeping your apps, files and most settings in place..

  1. Clear the LocalCache Folder: Open Run by pressing the Windows key + R hotkey.

Copy and paste %localappdata% in Run and click OK.

Open Packages> Microsoft.WindowsStore\_8wekyb3d8bbwe > LocalCache folder.

Press the Ctrl + A hotkey to select all content within the LocalCache folder.

Press the Delete button.
  1. Type services.msc in Search box, choose Run as Administrator, from Services tab ensure that Microsoft Store Install Service is started and set to Manual, if not restart PC.

Alternative methods to work through the above steps here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR1fux9Q9O4

  1. Next do everything in Step 10 of this checklist:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

  1. If nothing else works then do a Repair Install, by installing Media Creation Tool, open tool and choose to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows while keeping files, programs and most settings in place, and is also the most stable method to advance to the latest version. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

I believe there were a few errors during execution of Reset WU bat file, not sure how critical is that. Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade where you can select to keep your files and apps. Tried that 3 times - no luck. Now that I've gone back to 2004/19041.508, I get just the 0x80072F8F code. Time zone is properly set and synced with Microsoft servers, but I'll try looking up other ways to target this specific error.

Hello, the problem ended up being resolved by changing the region of my computer. My account is set up as an American account, but I accidently setup my desktop's region as Puerto Rico. Thank you to John DeV for the help!

(I also set Microsoft Store Install Service to Automatic, don't know if that is also required)
