r/MicrosoftTeams on Reddit: MS Teams site won't let me log into my school/work email, defaults to personal email and won't let me change accounts in settings
June 19, 2024 -

Close to tears writing this one. Was having an issue with One Drive when I decided to log out of the MS Teams site. Found out I couldn't log in again. Account is fine and functional in other MS apps (Outlook, Teams app, etc.) but opening the site defaults into my personal email and won't let me log into the account my school provided me with. Attempting to sign in only gets me "That Microsoft account doesn't exist. Enter a different account or get a new one."

Even signing into the site from MS 365 and other MS apps with my school account is no use, just prompts me into signing in before defaulting again. At my wits end, in dire need of help.

Hi Lance,
My name is Vasil Vasilev. I've been dealing with similar issues in the past.

Most likely, you daughter account has been saved locally on the machine, which is causing the issue. Whenever you open the Teams application, an SSO (single sign-on) token tries to authenticate you directly with the school account.
I would suggest performing the following actions:
1.Go to "Credentials Manager" > "Windows credentials" and delete all the credentials related to Teams.
2.Go to Windows Settings > Accounts > Access work or School and remove the school accounts from there as well. You can add you own Azure AD (Entra AD) account as a work account as well.
3.Deleting Teams desktop client cache, as suggested by Sola, is also recommended.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi Lance,

Thanks for contacting us and sorry for the inconveniences,

There are a few possible ways to fix this issue. One is to clear the cache and cookies of your browser, as well as the Teams app, to remove any traces of your daughter's school account. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/troubleshoot/teams-administration/clear-teams-cache

Another option is to sign out of your daughter's school account from the Teams app and the browser, and then sign in with your own account. To sign out of the Teams app, click on your profile picture in the top right corner, then select Sign out. To sign out of the Teams web app, click on your profile picture in the top right corner, then select Sign out of Teams. Then, try to sign in with your own account and see if it works.

A third option is to use a different browser or a private browsing mode to access Teams, and avoid using the same browser that your daughter used for her school account. This way, you can prevent any conflicts or errors due to the cached data or settings of the previous account. You can also try to use the Teams desktop app instead of the web app, or vice versa, and see if that makes any difference.

I hope this helps!

Regards, Sola

I’ve had so many issues with teams and joining as an external its beyond ridiculous for something that should be simple.

Had the same issue where it constantly asked me to join using a work account and not my personal.

I’ve deleted and created new accounts, used different browsers, deleted the teams app from mac. Gone on forums to check which type of account and app i need. Tried the desktop ones (mac) deleted hidden files using terminal.

It’s completely nuts.

I can’t believe im saying this but webex was easier and more reliable to use!

Hi Mark,

Thanks for contacting us and sorry for the inconveniences,

  • Check your Windows settings and make sure you are not signed in with a work or school account. To do this, go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and remove any accounts that are not your personal one.
  • Clear your Teams cache and credentials by deleting the Teams folder in %appdata%\Microsoft and removing any entries that start with MicrosoftAccount:user= in the Credential Manager.
  • Use a different browser to join the meeting with your personal account.

-Use an incognito window to join the meeting with your personal account.

Let me know if this helps or if you need further assistance.

Regards, Sola
