If a computer has many different versions, can the old ones be uninstalled safely?
I'm asking as being told that "the C++ libraries are used by applications across the years. Some newer applications use the new ones, older apps use the old ones. Even MS office uses some of the older libraries"
But I need to get computers updated for Cyber Security so feel that these need to be removed?

Microsoft Visual C++ (often abbreviated as MSVC or VC++) is a commercial (free version available), integrated development environment (IDE) product from Microsoft for the C, C++, and C++/CLI programming languages. It has tools for developing and debugging C++ code, especially code written for the Microsoft Windows API, the DirectX API, and the Microsoft .NET Framework.
The Visual C++ Redistributable Packages install runtime components that are required to run C++ applications built with Visual Studio 2012.
Different program uses different Visual C++, if you remove one, and a software package explicitly requires it, that software may stop working. Since many of these are x86/x64 pairs, you may very well need to keep those installed if you want all of your software to function properly.
If you only have a small number of programs installed you may be able to find the one's that
use the older versions. Often there will be a sub-folder in the software's install folder named
Redist, or similarly. The C++ or DirectX installer is usually there.
While I sometimes delete the folder with the installers (don't do it with games from Steam or Steam will just put it back again) I keep all 19 versions installed.
They don't really use much space before the 2010 and 2012 versions. Only five of the other 15 earlier versions are over 1MB.

it's all explained here, follow the suggested steps then add VC++ 2010 runtime as prerequisite. Done!
I would include the VC++ 2010 merge module into the setup project. Information on redistribution via merge module can be found in this MSDN article. General resitribution is available from the parent article.

Yes, for some unfathomable reason MS have shut down their direct C++ 2005, 08 & 10 downloads.
(Not unfathomable if the cynic in me is correct in assuming that MS have be trying their hardest since the launch of Win10

- If you are installing something from disc there should be a - vcredist.exe - in one of the sub-folders on the disc.
Install C++ from that vcredis.ex before you install the program and it may help.
(also note that with 2008\08 there are a number of sub-versions, which are modified versions of the original C++ files created by the
developers of that software. These are not included in the C++ installer from MS, and is why it advised to never uninstall any C++ files.

Most sites with free software tend to have download buttons for what are commonly known as PUP's (potentially unwanted software),
and these buttons are often bigger than the button for what you are wanting to download.
Just pay attention to what you are doing any you won't have any problems. There will always be a Window that pops up telling you
what is about to be downloaded before you proceed.
I just checked the download and it actually launches automatically. The title of "You have chosen to open" is - vcredist_2008.....
No worries. Click on the Save File option.
(Be sure to install both x86 and x64 )
I've downloaded and scanned the file with Avast and Malwarebytes - No threats or PUPs.
