My husband and I bought our janky fixer-upper house at the beginning of the year, it was built sometime between 1962 and 1964 and I'm trying to style the house around that time period. It's a slow process but I look forward to seeing how it evolves as I acquire more mid-century pieces. I'm not as hung up on authentic vs. reproduction or anything like that, I just want to capture the "vibe."
I'm running into a bit of a wall when it comes to painting my living/dining area and the connected hallway. A lot of catalogs and images I look at from the past or examples of mid-century modern homes I see online have beautiful paint colors and I thought I had nailed down the colors I wanted but I'm looking at my paint samples today and they just don't feel right. Part of the hang up is that we have a kitchen pass-through window so whatever colors I choose have to compliment the kitchen as well (which will eventually need to be redone basically from the ground up). I want to use this tile in the kitchen so the living/dining colors should compliment that.
The couch in the living area is more turquoise than teal so I initially had settled on a warm orange for the living/dining area and a greenish blue for the hallway but looking at them today, my paint samples look more like beach sunset colors to me than mid-century. I think part of that is that most mid-century homes that I see have a lot of bold, dark wood which kind of adds to that aesthetic but unfortunately I don't have that here, the only wood I have other than the window frames is the pass-through counter which is currently covered in black paint. I have one small accent wall that appears to have beadboard on it and I don't think it's actual wood so I don't want to risk stripping it (I'm thinking about painting it with a wood grain stamp to make it look like "real wood"). The floors were refinished to a much lighter color which also throws my color coordination out of whack.
So this is a long winded post basically asking, how do you pick your paint colors? Do you have a resource that has really good color palettes? Any particular paint manufacturers you recommend for a good mid-century color catalog? Any advice you want to share from experience? I'm really nervous that I'm going to spend all this time painting and then once it's done, I'm going to hate it.
Any tips are greatly appreciated!
I'm renovating my living room!
My house has a lot of mid-century elements, gorgeous yellow wood trim all through the house, stone fireplace, alcoves, and sconces.
I want to emphasize these original features in my living room renovation and create a space that looks sleek and embraces the "cool retro movie star who lives in the LA hills" elements of mid-century modern.
We've sourced some really cool furniture pieces from marketplace, but I'm really struggling with paint colours for the walls.
I want to steer clear of cream coloured walls as much as possible, and I'm very willing to experiment with darker paints.
Please give me your signature mid century modern paint suggestions !
